Are you able to open a PDF file?

That will check that the Ghostscript version you have installed is compatible with the XnView Classic version you are using, note that XnView Classic requires 32-bit Ghostscript even on Windows 64-bit.

I have the same issue.

Windows 10 21H1
XnView MP Windows
Version 0.98.0 64bits (Dec 14 2020)
Portable version

installed:
Ghostscript 9.55.0 for Windows (32 bit)
Ghostscript 9.55.0 for Windows (64 bit)

but still can not open PDF-Sample.pdf and .ai files.

however psd files are working, but they also work without install ghost script.

If you are unable to open PDF files there would seem to be a compatibility issue, again...

Are you able to attach PDF-Sample.pdf for someone else to test, people have sometimes reported that a particular PDF file cannot be opened?

This thread relates to XnView Classic but it looks as if your issue with XnView MP is likely related.

Your file PDF-Sample.pdf opens for me in XnView MP 0.99.1 on Linux, but unfortunately I can't easily determine which version of Ghostscript is installed.

Could someone running XnView MP on Windows please test and report which 'MP version and Ghostscript version they have installed?

You are using XnView MP 0.98 which is quite an old version now, you might consider updating to the current 0.99.1 version and testing again, this does look like a Ghostscript version compatibility issue.

It is my bad, with the latest version, Version 0.99.1 64bits (Sep 23 2021) on windows 10 21H1, it is working now.

After it is working, I found out this thread's issue is different with mine.
When open some .ai file, it display a "warning message image", instead of the actual image. (you can see the waring after zooming in, like the screenshot at below)
The warning ask the .ai file to be saved with pdf "PDF compatible".
