RC2: English On-Screen texts

Post by helmut »

XnView 1.80 offers new functionality. Sure enough there's new labels. Since neither Pierre nor I are native speakers, we would like to ask some English native speakers to have a look at the words and wordings used below. E.g. is there such a thing as "Drop shadow"? "3D border" or "3D Border"? Suggestions are welcome. The #define is for C++ programming, also it gives you some idea, in which context the text/label is used.

Thank you & Greetings,

Helmut

--Edit--Start--Correction --
I'm wrong. 3D border is clear, now that I found program.
I'm wrong about Drop shadow also.
These functions are in filter>'effects...' menu.
--End--Correction--

'Drop Shadow' seems very unclear. 'Remove Shadow' looks better (if it does this).
'3D Border' could be slightly unclear. 'Textured Border' looks better. Or 'Raised Border'.
'multi-page' should be used with another word like: 'multi-page file' or 'multi-page image'
(using 'multi-page' by itself is unclear when used as an option).

Trivial issue: Menu items like 'Capture screen...' should read 'Capture Screen'.

Create a shade

Post by Clo »

 marsh

:) Hello !
'Drop Shadow' seems very unclear. 'Remove Shadow' looks better (if it does this).
- No, it doesn't. I tested, and I think one could say rather : "Create a shade". It's a nice effect which creates a shade (shifted shadow).
- I didn't found out any exact equivalent of the right French turn (ombre portée) that is very precise in that case… Indeed, I can misunderstand that, because the handling is not obvious… Maybe that effect could be used for both remove a shade (if there is any), or create one (if there is not)?

[OT -a bit-]
Globally, the current language-system in XnView sucks. Like I see here, the worst is for native English speakers, since their language is embedded in the EXE…
- Ages ago, I (and others) requested a language-system based on text-files, easy to change and translate.
- For languages in the DLLs, it's possible to find some "wild" solution …
But text-files for the strings and the menus are much better.
[/OT]

 Kind regards,
Claude

:) Hello Clo,
'Create a shade' feature seems to only create shadow and not remove. And, it
creates a white background underneath to highlight shadow.

Since it does more than create shadow, why not name it ombre portée?:)

Drop Shadow

Post by helmut »

The 'Drop Shadow' is possibly a fantasy translation from French. Think the right word is 'Hard Shadow' or 'Cast Shadow'.

Right. Drop Shadow is correct and not French fantasy, e.g. http://webclipart.about.com/cs/tutorialshelp/g/drop.htm

For novice users it might sound a bit like a shadow is dropped (=removed, deleted).

:) Humm… Finally, why not “Process shade(s)”?
- I tested again, and now I can assume that this effect is able to create a shade.
- With the two cursors, we can adjust the ratio of the shade regarding the whole pic, and change the location of that shade. But in the tentative French DLL that Pierre provided, the location-cursor is so-called “Number” (Nombre), that is quite unclear and meaningless… Why not : “Location…” (of the shade) ?

- When creating such a shade, the original size of the pic remains unchanged.
The part "pic" itself is cropped automatically, following the ratio of the created shade, that is nice :D
- It should be interesting to see what happens processing a pic having originally this kind of effect, coming from any another soft … ? It could be possible to decrease, even remove the shade, I guess…

[OT - quite -]
- About your missing avatar-pic, why not attempt to create a personal Web (in Win) or FTP server,
using the "No-IP" site or so ?
[/OT]

 Pierre

- Please, give us more information about that nice feature.
- Anyway, "Shadow" seems wrong, since it means rather "The Dark", while "Shade" is caused by an object (i.e. a tree…), here, the picture…

Minor cause…

Post by Clo »

 marsh

:) Hi again !
Trivial issue: Menu items like 'Capture screen...' should read 'Capture Screen'.
- Well, well ! Not so trivial than you could think. “ Minor causes can bring about major results ”.
- Indeed, this is correct in English. But, wrongly from that English feature, I see a lot of "translations" or English langage-files (not made by native English speakers) where each word of each string has a capital letter !

- Hence, I've to correct this, wasting a lot of hours… and howling so high that I bet you heard me from the Texas ! :D
- For instance, in French only the proper nouns and the first letter of the phrase (forward a dot only) must get a cap. So, such texts look quite ridiculous…
- However, sometimes it's useful to write an "illegal" capital letter to set hotkeys (by a “&” before), i.e. with "g", "i", "y" or else the hotkey is almost invisible…

Claude

There was no feedback for a longer while, so I move this one to 'Solved'.
