I'm having trouble with MP4 videos and slideshow. On one machine, it works in XNView Classic, but not in MP. On another machine, I get a format error in Classic, Do not have MP installed on that machine, but also can't play MP4 just in the classic browser.

I've upgraded to the latest full version of Classic, but still no luck. I haven't installed any external plugins. What is needed to play MP4?

you should use MP, it has internal video codec

As I stated above, MP4 playback did not work in MP in slideshow.
