I just tried to upgrade from 1.8.3 to 1.8.7. The installation got stuck trying to install the shell extension. I'm on windows 11 home, latest version.
This is the exact same problem I encountered and reported with 1.8.3 in this post - viewtopic.php?t=48115&sid=ba23bafa67032 ... 8a6dbce98a
Specific post - viewtopic.php?p=202257&hilit=shell+extension#p202257
Basically, the installation reports that explorer is running. It offers to shut it down as part of the install, which I accepted. Next thing I know, boom - the task bar at the bottom of the screen is gone. Now, I know how to run a new explorer instance - hit ctrl+Shift+escape, to launch task manager, then use task manager to 'run new task', and have it run explorer.exe. But this should not be necessary. PLUS - my 'start menu' won't open, and 'alt-tab' is the 'low resolution' / windows-xp type of task switcher. So I'm going to have to reboot, which is not good.
The problem as I see it is, 'of course explorer is running' - explorer is a crucial part of the windows environment. No other program installation requires the complete shutdown of explorer.exe during the installation of shell extensions. I recently installed 'beyond compare' and it installs several shell extensions, without a hitch.
