Folder ratings disappear
When I give folders a rating the rating sometimes disappears. Is there a way to keep the rating on a folder permanently? Picture ratings don't disappear do they? I really rely on the ratings to sort through a sea of pictures.

Re: Folder ratings disappear
Unfortunately I don't, I can tell you what happened last time but when I try to replicate it nothing changes. I go through a folder and give ratings to pictures, then I rate the folder based on the highest rated picture, then next time I want to view the best pictures of an album I select the album, select the star rating, only the folders with the appropriate rating show up, I select one folder, select the star rating to show only the highest rated pictures, select all pictures, select "open all selected," pressed the up arrow to the folder lists and all the folders lost their ratings.
That is what happened last time.
EDIT: I should clarify, by up arrow I mean that green arrow with a curved tail to the left of the folder address on the menu with the star ratings.

Re: Folder ratings disappear
It happened again and when I did the same thing. It's not easily reproducible but if I go into a folder, select a star to show only pictures with that rating, then press the green upward arrow to go back to the list of folders without undoing the star selection (I don't know what else to call it) then the folders lose their star rating.
I just updated xnview to the most recent build today before it happened.
EDIT: And by not easily replicatable I mean if I try to do the same thing again to get the same results it doesn't always do it. It's just a glitch that occasionally happens if I forget to undo the star selector.

Re: Folder ratings disappear
Whoa a strange thing just happened. I didn't know what version I had so I
1. looked up the app in my search bar
2. opened file location
3. it was a shortcut so I left clicked it to open the shortcut location
4. found the app hoping the version would be on the exe (it wasn't)
5. clicked on the exe
6. It asked if I wanted to restore the session (I didn't save a session but I said yes to see what it was talking about)
7. It opened a session I had open a long time ago.
Do I have two separate xnviews? Because I thought xnview always looked in the same place since I downloaded it, C:\Users\(my user name)\AppData\Roaming\XnViewMP. Isn't that where sessions are stored? How did I get two sessions?
By the way I eventually found my version in help/About. It's 1.8.0 which I'm assuming isn't the latest version even though I re-downloaded the 64 bit version for windows this February on the 1st of this year. Am I updating it wrong?
EDIT: By the way, the xnview that opened an old session was the one in my Program Files while the xnview I always open is the icon I have saved to my taskbar.
ANOTHER EDIT: I figured it out. My taskbar xnview isn't the installed one, it's a stand alone program on an external. I updated the wrong one. I do have two programs. Let me update it and get back to you.

Re: Folder ratings disappear
OK, I switched to the newer XnView, it says 1.8.3 for 64-bit windows. I will let you know if I still have the problem of folder ratings disappearing. I may have just had an old version.
Re: Folder ratings disappear
Hi,
I am using 1.8.7 64bit version and no matter what I tried, I simply cannot set a persistent rating to a folder. When I change directories, the rating dissapears. Any workarounds?
EDIT:
I reinstalled the app and problem resolved, but I lost my previously rated folders for goood. At least, folder ratings are working now. I dont know what went wrong though....

Catalog should be enabled (default state) in order to keep folder metadata.Hancer wrote: Tue Apr 01, 2025 4:29 pm I am using 1.8.7 64bit version and no matter what I tried, I simply cannot set a persistent rating to a folder. When I change directories, the rating dissapears. Any workarounds?
If you have issues with enabled Catalog - you can try the following, checking after each step:
1. rename XnView.db
2. rename xnview.ini
3. reinstall app, deleting all app files (make backup if required)

Re: Folder ratings disappear
My folder's are doing it again, the ratings are disappearing. I have Catalog Enabled, I have a file already named XnView.db and rename xnview.ini. I really don't want to have to uninstall and reinstall the program as I'm worried about losing metadata.
I already lost considerable hours of rating pictures when I switched from a stand alone program to the installed version despite bringing all the config files and files associated with settings to the correct folder.
EDIT: I think it happens when I click on the parent folder and then click away before the bar at the bottom finishes loading however I haven't been able to replicate it.

Re: Folder ratings disappear
So you use a clean xnview.ini? You rate a folder, change current folder, and go back and no more rating?Ilikemyprivacy wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 10:04 pm My folder's are doing it again, the ratings are disappearing. Re: Folder ratings disappear
I don't know what you mean by "clean xnview.ini" but I do have that file in my folder where metadata is found.
What I think is happening is when I go into a folder with a bunch of sub folders, that are rated, there is a green bar that slowly fills up as the screen loads the folders and their ratings, and I think what happens is if I switch to another folder too soon the ratings disappear. But like I said, I haven't been able to replicate it. I just know I'm losing folder ratings and that is important to sort the pictures in the folder.

I'm not able to reproduce. What do you have in Settings>Metadata & Settings>Catalog?Ilikemyprivacy wrote: Thu May 29, 2025 5:50 pm What I think is happening is when I go into a folder with a bunch of sub folders, that are rated, there is a green bar that slowly fills up as the screen loads the folders and their ratings, and I think what happens is if I switch to another folder too soon the ratings disappear. The first picture is of Settings>Metadata.
The second picture is of Settings>Catalog
I don't know of any Settings>Metadata & Catalog>Catalog.
I see Settings>Catalog has memory usage for database engine, is it possible I just don't have enough memory allocated to the database engine? I do have a LOT of pictures.
