I would like to read out the "orientation" and depending on this to rotate it.

This has been requested for NConvert before (see topic Rotate based on EXIF, but I don't know what the status is.
From what I can see, it's not available, yet: In command line options of NConvert there is no suitable option.

An alternative might be using Batch Conversion of XnView. But you cannot start Batch Conversion using a script. And from what I can see there is no transformation "Rotate according to EXIF info", either.
