Image quality in shrink to fit screen
I've been using ACDSee for many years but as it has become extremely bloated these days (still use an old version because of that) I'm looking for alternatives. XNViewMP seems like the best one I've tried. However I did encounter an issue with how images that are larger than the screen are shrinked to fit.
I have an example below. This is a screen capture of an image which is 4-5 times the width of the screen as it is shown by both applications. You can see that ACDSee produces a rather sharper result whereas XNViewMP is too soft for my taste. I know this is down to whatever resampling filter is used (bicubic, bilinear or whatever else) and its settings and I was wondering if there is some way to improve sharpness. So setting that I haven't found somewhere?

In the editor (rather than file browser) menu you have various Filter options.
And in Tools > View > View tab there are various High quality zoom options that might be useful.

Re: Image quality in shrink to fit screen
Hi cday, thanks for your help.
I assume Tools/Settings/View/High zoom quality is the setting I'm looking for. I tried all settings but they don't have the slightest difference. I literally checked pixel for pixel at 400% magnification and they all produce exactly the same result. I've set the first drop-down to zoom in/out to make sure it applies to my case but it just doesn't do anything.

Could you upload the original image so that someone else can see if they can suggest a solution?
And as far as possible, the settings and steps that you are taking to display the image that you find of low quality.

Re: Image quality in shrink to fit screen
This is the image but it doesn't really matter. This is not tied to a specific image. I haven't changed any settings on the app except as I said Tools/Settings/View/High zoom quality which doesn't seem to change anything.
The issue is that the image is very wide and has to be zoomed out in order to fit on the screen. The quality of the displayed image is not as good (softened edges) as it is in ACDSee which produces a sharper result as shown in my first post. I assumed that changing the "high zoom quality" setting I could get a better result. Lanzcos is a better algorithm (according to my tests on converting 4K to FHD video) but it doesn't make any difference here. Maybe this setting works on something else?

Does this setting do anything for you?

Hi, the image is the one I have posted above. I don't really think it has to do with a specific image. I tried with a couple more and got the same results.
I put the image on postimage because it's too large to attach here.

Clicking on the image posted above brings up the linked PostImage page, with an option at top-left to download the full size 7.6 MB image.

No, there's no option. I'm actually using a very old version because it has become so bloated that I don't want to deal with the newer versions.
When you change the "high zoom quality" algorithm does it make any difference to you? Lanzcos should be sharper but to me it doesn't have any effect.

Re: Image quality in shrink to fit screen
@8bit: What you're describing is a Windows DPI/scaling issue.
Are you using any DPI/scaling settings in Windows? (Check under your system settings.)
In your application? (XnViewMP has a "HiDPI" zoom option.)
In your application's launcher shortcut? (Found under the "Compatibility" tab).
In your GPU settings? (Check under the GPU's control panel.)
Here's an idea in Windows 10 of where to look for the application shortcut options:

Hi, thanks for you help but I don't think so.winnylinny wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 1:50 pm @8bit: What you're describing is a Windows DPI/scaling issue.

No, that is off. I only use the high zoom quality option which doesn't seem to do anything for me. I've already asked several times if changing that algorithm produces any different result for anyone else but I've gotten no replies.winnylinny wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 1:50 pm In your application? As I said this had to do with how each app resizes (zooms out) large images. Nothing to do with windows.

Re: Image quality in shrink to fit screen
Enable it, then restart XnViewMP.
I don't have the issue you're facing on my Linux computers.
On my Windows computer, the issue occurs if I disable "Zoom on HiDPI" in XnViewMP and/or if I'm using any Windows DPI/scaling options.

Re: Image quality in shrink to fit screen
I enabled it and restarted but it doesn't change anything. My resolution is 1920x1200 so I don't think it's particularly high and that it applies to my screen. In any case I tried it and it didn't help.
I even tried changing the algorithm in high zoom quality and restarting between the changes but again it made no difference.
