"Damaged" images don't display but display fine in Gwenview

Hello, I just started using XnView MP and I just have to say, wow. It's amazing, I'm shocked it took me so long to find out about it honestly.
I've been previewing images in Gwenview on KDE and "damaged" images (or images that don't have all their data) display fine in Gwenview. Some of the image shows, the rest is just missing which is expected.

My issue is that when I attempt to view these images in XnView it will not display them. I'm hoping there is a setting or dependency I'm missing. Thanks for any input anyone has!


System is Debian based, KDE Desktop Environment.

Are you able to provide an example "damaged" image, and if necessary describe the "damage"?

One file format, or several?

If you are referring to SVG files as displaying "damaged", there is a known issue in that the decoder currently used does not display all the content of some files.

Sorry , these are .jpg images that are only partially showing. I did a data recovery and I'm sorting through the recovered files. Most of them are displaying correctly however the "damaged" ones don't display in Xn View. They do display correctly in gwenview.

By correctly I mean , portions of the image are visible but other parts are Grey because data is missing. For an example image should I post a screenshot or upload the file somewhere and share it ?

This seems an unusual problem, a file that Pierre can test would be best, ideally also a screenshot in case the issue can't immediately be reproduced.

Current forum attachment size limit is 2MiB.

I've uploaded an example image. It is the png file.

When I try to open it in XnView it just says it can't be displayed. However if I open it with Gwenview I get the parts of the image I can see, which is what I'd like to happen. Screenshot of what I'd like to see is the .jpg. Although it also looks like the forum displays the uploaded image how I'd like as well.

Both files open to display the same image except for the size for me, as in your post...

Am I missing something, what do you see in Gwenview?

Yes, an unusual image, but it opens as displayed in your post above.

I've checked and even with the viewer setting File > Format settings... -- Read tab -- Ignore read errors option *unchecked* the file opens normally for me.

Seems to point to a bug in your XnView MP installation?? I am using 1.4.0 in Linux but I know of no recent history of a bug: if you are using Windows you could possibly try the ZIP portable download, which you should be able to run independently.

I don't know enough about Linux for that, I installed the DEB in Mint 19 and everything is fine at least in that respect. But could the package you installed have been corrupted?

You could try the AppImage download which should run entirely independently, note that the FlatPak download is probably still an earlier version.
