Every time I perform an operation on a file & save XnViewMP dumps an .xmp file in the folder. Are these supposed to be temp files?

how do you reproduce that?
" View, Update files from catalog"

I think it's a bit inconsistent to uncheck the "export" and "create a sidecar" options, to create and export a sidecar ...
but it is useful ... if someone needs to write exif data into a sidecar file
