Xnview MP no longer opening heic on Win 10

Post by shaopow »

Hi, I’m encountering an odd problem after installing Xnview MP on my win10 home machine.

Images are on NAS, no problem accessing.
See preview of all image types in Browser, no issue.

Initially was able to open all image types with double click on thumbnail without any problem. After a while though, I started getting a pop up asking me for a default program to open heic files. Xnview was not on the list. At some point, I must have accidentally clicked “ok” and set the default to the Photos app. So now when I click on heic images, they go to Photos app.

Should be easy to fix right? I just changed the default in Win10 for heic to Xnview. But now when I double click an heic thumbnail, it opens another instance of Xnview without the image in the Viewer.

I can still use Xnview to do File>open>heic image and this works fine.

Any idea how to fix? I’ve tried resetting defaults and reinstalling Xnview without any success.

Thanks!

Sorry to be a dimwit about this -
I think you mean go into RegEdit and find the entry for HEIC, but I don't know where to look. Can you please give a few details?
Thank you!

Yes I tried "Open With" from Windows Explorer - still did not work. Just opens up another instance of XnView, but not the image.

I also went into RegEdit and did a "Find" on HEIC. There are a number of entries, which entry is relevant? Most say "no value set".

Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem - just installed latest version and still the problem exists. Might you please let us know what exact steps do you recommend to restore the registry entry ? From where shall I restore registry ? Is there anything I need to copy from one key to another ? Import / export something ?

Thanks for your help !

Check your HKCR\.heic registry entry. You can perhaps restore it by using context menu > open with
