Can Xnconvert do grey scale conversion?
If it can, how is it done.
Is there a tutorial for this program available?
Thanks, Allen

If you want to convert some color images TO greyscale, then you can do like this:
1. Select the photos
2. Go to Tools | Batch Convert... (or press Ctrl+U)
3. Set up in the Output tab where do you want to save the converted files as well as the format of these files.
4. Go to Actions Tab and press 'Add Action'
5. In the menu which opens choose 'Image' (it is the 1st option) and then 'Change color depth'
6. Now you should see a new action called 'Change Color Depth' added to the list of actions. There choose 'Greyscale'
7. Press 'Convert' and enjoy!

I thought this would be easy, something is amiss.
I can “add files” and see the picture.
I can set the “output” with no problem. (I think).
When I go to “Actions” the photo is not there.
I can “Add action” and “Set colour depth”, and select “grey-scale”, but with no picture to work with I get no results after I hit “convert” button.
What am I doing wrong?

When I go to “Actions” the photo is not there.
I have also sometimes found previewing the effect of actions confusing and that some trial and error was necessary.
The two buttons outlined in red in the screenshot are both unlabelled but do have tooltips: 'Apply actions' for the lower one and 'Update preview' for the higher one.
I've also found that for some actions the preview seems to be updated automatically when parameters are changed, but for others or in other circumstances it is necessary to update the preview manually.
I think the interface design could possibly be more intuitive -- but I don't have any immediate suggestions for how it could be improved -- so I would suggest some more experimentation...
You are using mainstream input file formats, so that that couldn't be an issue?
Edit:
Are you using XnConvert, XnView MP or even XnView 'Classic' ? And on which operating system?

I have it working correctly.
Found the out put file and have the preview working as well as grey scale.
Thanks to all, Allen
