RC3: "Don't start browser thumbnail" option

Post by Danny »

I don't even know exactly what this option does but it seems to be broken somehow. Once activated, XNView always starts the browser with no folder being selected and with an completely empty file pane.

But what's even worse is that the mini toolbar menus "view as" and "sort by" are now completely empty. Deactivating "Don't start browser thumbnail" doesn't help either. I have to manually delete the .ini to make them work again. But if i now activate the option again the menus keep working. So the problem lies in activating at least one more setting in combination with "Don't start browser thumbnail". I'll try to find out what caused the problem.

So what's this option even good for? Not starting the browser in thumbnail mode? To me it looks like a completely useless option so you might as well remove it unless it has some important function that i'm not aware of.

On a sidenote: It makes the "Browse with XNView" folder system extension redundant since it will not start in the folder you right-clicked on.

edit: I've already found out what the problem is. The .ini setting "UseExtendedMenu" is being switched to "1". That results in the two mentioned menus becoming empty. I don't know why that setting has even been changed though. That's for you to find out.

It is useful !

:) Hello !
- How can you say that an option is useless, while you don't understand what it does ? :P

“Don't start Browser thumb-nail”

- Also, please give a glance HERE
But what's even worse is that the mini toolbar menus "view as" and "sort by" are now completely empty.
- Right, I noticed that here. And to remake a new INI file for each new RC version is rather tedious ! AFAIR, I didn't need such an operation for a mountain of versions I updated /upgraded for many years…

- The same too : I noticed that the RC3 has changed some settings for me…

 Kind regards,
Claude

and that hung the PC…
2. Or else, the browser opened the first directory in the tree, or any directory containing a lot of pics (previously opened in the main window), and caused too a crash, because not enough memory (16 MB maxi. supported under Win 3.1 only).
1. You can now specify which folder should be displayed on startup.
2. Noone has just 16MB of RAM anymore.

So, as you can see, these problems are now gone, right? I think XNView doesn't even run under Win3.1 anymore, and noone's using it anymore either.

So this option either needs some adjustment or it should be removed. If it's function was changed to "Don't start in thumbnail view" it would be of the same use for very, very, very low-performance PCs.

Don't think so…

- Sorry, you think wrongly… A Win 32S version is available still, and Pierre could tell us how many a month are downloaded.

- Nowadays, the problem stays the same with regard to the installed RAM amounts and the needs of the new (very) greedy programs and OSs…
- Anyway, I don't wish to get automatically to browse any dir. at the start up time, so that option is useful for me still.

- Let's wait for know that Pierre thinks about… 8)

1. You probably meant Win16 since Win3.1 is not a 32bit Windows. But you're right so maybe just remove/change it for the Win32 program.
2. No, that's simply not true. Even the cheapest PC for 300€ has at least 256MB of RAM.
3. Then select "My Computer" as your starting location and there will be no folder selected either.
4. Of course, in the end it's up to Pierre.

Greets

edit: I just found out here that the empty menus stem from the "Use XP-Style Menus" option.

:) ¤ "Win 32S" was a free API / addon released by MickeySoft in order to get some 32-bit programs working under Win 3.1 (and to avoid a lot of trials in Courts!).
• Indeed, they might be designed in that way. XnView had and has still such a version… It's a 32-bit app. working in a 16-bit OS with "Win 32S" only. I know that I tell still :P
Even the cheapest PC for 300€ has at least 256MB of RAM.
¤ Yes… What is the remaining real free RAM amount when you have loaded XP, then a hundred of pics being 1 MB each (with an empty cache) ?
- I don't wish to set any location to which the Browser points, like I said already.
Of course, in the end it's up to Pierre
¤ Indeed, even if many others and I helped and help him a lot, it's HIS program !
