Lossless crop and jpg files

Post by lawndart »

Will lossless crop always result in smaller file sizes?
Sometimes jpg files increase in size after cropping with RC4.
(which I expect when images are reencoded).

I think I had some larger jpgs increase in size by a large percent.

Here is a quick test of one jpg just show what my settings are:

800x600x24 161.63 original
(a desktop sreenshot using printscreen imported from windows clipboard)
(saved using xnews;jpg settings quality 94; optimize Huffman table)
(after cropping used 'save as', did not overwrite original)

794x596x24 164.14 crop 1 of original
797x596x24 162.49 crop 2 of original
793x591x24 161.04 crop 3 of original
797x598x24 162.47 crop 4 of original
796x597x24 164.98 crop 5 of original

Make a selection, and in jpeg lossless button (toolbar), you have crop

My mistake. I have been using standard crop function.
I completelely missed the crop option under the jpeg lossless button.
(because it is found under the arrow, not popup transformations screen.)
So both crop functions seem to work as expected.

I suggest to add lossless crop to crop button too and to right mouse button - there is crop "normal" only (for possible conflits)

Also it looks, it's working good... thanks Pierre :D
