Personal upgrade priority IPTC/XMP

Post by michel038 »

My priority would be to reverse the priority between xmp and iptc. Currently, iptc seems to be the priority choice for Xnviewmp, or even the only choice in many cases or menus (e.g. quick search).

Iptc is increasingly considered obsolete, we should have the option of abandoning it and keep only xmp metadata, as the range of XMP metadata already available in xnviewmp concerns the most classic and universal ones. The cat on the left is no longer in doubt in 2023 ...

I should add that there are hundreds of powerful free graphics editors, but to my knowledge, there are only just over 3 complete, user-friendly and free metadata management softwares, so this is the feature that I'd like to focus on.
XnViewMP is mainly an image viewer, all options to view images with a lot of informations is also welcome

I would like to add some...

List of software supporting - fully/somehow - iptc-xmp-metadata is https://iptc.org/standards/photo-metada ... e-support/

IPTC is still in use. Even the "deprecated iptc 015 (resorts = only 3x characters)" is still in use in a few database...

With XMP the problems are growing with more new "namespaces" popping up out of nowhere...

Sorry "michel038" did a "Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)" to follow the subject/suggestions...

Tools > Batch rename > Name template > Here, XMP fields are suggested: This is the correct template
Tools > Batch convert > Output > File name > XMP missing
Tools > Import and sort > Photos > New name > XMP missing
Tools > Import and sort > Photos > IPTC template > XMP template missing
Metadata > Transfer > (Source data) > missing XMP

Tools>Settings :
> Explorer > Tooltips > XMP missing
> Thumbnails > Labels > XMP missing
> Thumbnails > Labels > Custom label > XMP missing
> View > Information > missing XMP
> Explorer > Quick Filter > IPTC ... Missing XMP and maybe Exif? With the new location suggested by User0 (drop down menu) it would be even more appreciable.

OK, I've got the point. In the options above are mostly IPTC related suggestions and the XMP related once are missing.

Does this help...
There is a sync between iptc <=> xmp in the "Edit XMP > Options > Mode: XMP, update or create IPTC-IIM"
There is a sync between iptc <=> xmp in the "Edit IPTC-IIM > Options > Mode: XMP, update or create IPTC-IIM"

Could this be made possible...
So there is a "general sync "iptc <=> xmp"- on the fly" missing, when you open an image to have metadata always both IPTC & XMP?
by default: Setting > Metadata > IPTC & XMP > new option: "XMP, update or create IPTC-IIM" or "IPTC-IIM, update or create XMP" ...?

Tools > Batch rename > Name template > Here, XMP fields are suggested: This is the correct template
(.. while clicking on the arrow >: I like to suggest under "XMP": "XMP FWC" is missing there..)

Metadata > Transfer > (Source data) > missing XMP
(Just test vers. 1.5.6: Is it: Metadata > Transfer > +ADD > XMP > Source > Exif...IPTC! / no XMP given !?)

Re: Personal upgrade priority IPTC/XMP Quick Filter

Post by michel038 »

"Quick filter search" works only on iptc fields.

I tried today Microsoft Photos 2023.1110 on Win10 :
"Add description" will write XMP description field only > Xnview MP does not allow you to search for this information (except in advanced search)
( When iptc data already exist in the photo, Microsoft will write also IPTC caption and IPTC title , and then XnViewMP Quick filter will work)

This means that users who use both Microsoft Photos and XnViewMP will first have to add iptc data to all photos.
The way Microsoft has managed metadata over the years is not very good and very difficult to control.
