The first time I open an image by double clicking the thumbnail in the browser, the viewer opens an image with dimensions that are far smaller than the actual file.
E.g a JPEG of 10MB with 6516x3665 pixels, opens as a 815x459 version. When I close the viewer and double click the thumbnail in the browser again it renders correctly.
It also does not happen when navigating forward or backward within the viewer itself.
I found that disabling [settings > view > misc > two-pass rendering at loading] solves the issue.

Fixed. Can now turn the option back to its default: enabled and the images load correctly.
