Slow load on my best PC

Post by gordol »

I have XnView MP (currently Version 1.4.2 64bits (Jan 23 2023)) installed on three PCs, and on my newest and bestest one, XnView takes about a full minute to load and become usable, the other two it's pretty much instant. I can get the full details of the "other two" if needed, but nutshell is they are both a few years old, one is an almost 6 year old i3 based system with 16G of RAM, a spinning hard drive and Win10, cannot be updated to 11. The other other one is a 3 year old i5 based laptop with 8 or 16 G of RAM and an SSD, was Win10 is now Win11.

The one with the issue is less than 6 months old Dell Inspiron 3910, Win11, i7, 16G RAM and an SSD. Other info can be provided as needed.

It does not matter if I have XnView set to open on the last folder, a specific folder, or no folder at all.

OneDrive, Google Drive and one of the PCs hosts a couple shared drives as well.

could you try to change debug=2 in xnview.ini, you'll have a debug window. Please tell me where you have the delay in this window?

This is no longer happening with the 1.4.3 update.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your best PC isn't performing as expected. Given the specs of your Dell Inspiron 3910, it definitely shouldn't be taking that long to load XnView MP.
Here are a few things you might want to check:
1. Background Processes: Make sure there aren't any unnecessary programs running in the background that could be hogging resources.
2. Drivers and Updates: Ensure all your drivers, especially for your SSD and graphics card, are up to date. Sometimes an outdated driver can cause significant slowdowns.
3. Clean Boot: Try performing a clean boot to see if there's any software conflict causing the delay.
4. Resource Monitor: Use the Task Manager to monitor CPU, memory, and disk usage when loading XnView. This might give you a clue about what's causing the bottleneck.
Since it seems to be specific to your newest machine, it could also be worth comparing settings and installed software with your other PCs.
Setup is virtually identical in terms of OS and installed software on two computers, and the third is a PC too old to run Win11, is slow, etc. This PC is the only one with the problem. Even my original gen Surface GO has no issues here.
