bak Files ???

Post by BuckSkin »

At least on my machine, XnView MP has an annoying habit of randomly producing .bak files.
These .bak files show up as thumbnails right alongside the real image file.
I have no idea what the purpose of a .bak file could be.
This behavior is quite random.

What is the purpose and benefit, if any, of these .bak files ?

Is it possible to prevent their being created ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

I am sorry; it is .bak and not .bac; I corrected it in my initial post.

.bak are created when using lossless operation. You can disable them in settings>General>File operations>Make backup...

Thank you.

Are there any negative effects to disabling them ?

I am sorry, but search as I may, I am not seeing anything in Settings that will permit me to change this behavior.
I have version 0.81 x64 (27-Jun-2016)

I installed the most recent version.
I went to Settings > General > File Operations and unchecked "Make backup for other lossless operations", in fact, all three "Make Backup" options are unchecked.
I closed and restarted.

After all that, within minutes, it had made several more .bak files.

The only thing I am doing is editing embedded comments and adding iptc/xmp data.

The thumbnails for the bak files look exactly like the jpegs; I am afraid I am going to delete a jpeg while trying to get rid of the bak files.

you use only 'Edit IPTC' dialog, and .bak comes? on which format?

Sometimes it happens when using "Edit Comment" and sometimes with "Edit IPTC/XMP"

I only ever do this with jpegs.

Another thing it does very often is to "lose" one or more files that are definitely in a folder; I know for absolute fact that the jpegs are there, but for whatever reason, XnView is not displaying them; I can temporarily open a different folder and then go back to the folder I want and the missing thumbnails will reappear.

Machine is 64-bit Windows 7 Pro.
