XNView Classic Closes when Previewing File Windows 10

Post by saint_wolf »

Good day!

Long time since I last requested for support here, so technically, I'm still a newbie.
Firstly, i've been using XNView Classic since it's ealiest versions and you have done a great job!
So thanks for that. :)

The issue started (I think) after the latest Windows Update last Sep. 9.
Did a restart after the Update.
Then, any file I open takes me to the usual Preview Mode, and then closes automatically.
I've tried uninstall / re-install, clean uninstall / reinstall, and still ended up with the same issue.

I'm currently using XNViewMP because this is the only one working.
But sadly, it feels slower (compared to the XNView Classic).
Even the Preview takes 4-5 secs to open.

Anyway, it would really be a great help if you can assist me with my XNView Classic, as I really want to switch back to using it.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!
Cheers!

Do you have tried 'open with'? or change associations?

Hi Pierre!

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, i've already tried the "open with" and the file associations.
The JPEG file (for example) opens, for a brief moment, then closes.
However, when I launch the Full Browser, it runs normally.

As for the XNViewMP: Yes, it always take 4-5 secs everytime.
It always opens with a white fullscreen, then after 4-5 secs the actual photo will be previewed.
I've already set the "when opening from file" to "normal" and unchecked the "Open browser" from the Startup settings.
The Full Browser, however, opens instantly (like the XNView Classic).

By the way, I'm really liking this XNViewMP and planning to use this onward should the XNView Classic issue doesn't get resolved.
But I need the "viewer" to open files faster.

Hope the above info helps.

Thanks again and have a nice day!

Cheers!

if you put one jpeg file in a empty folder, same problem?

do you have a lot of files in the folder?

Yes. Even if the file is just in the desktop. Same issue. Also, all image files does the same (PNG, GIF, etc.)
It opens the file in Preview Mode, then closes after.
But, when i open the file using Full Browser mode, the file opens normally.
do you have a lot of files in the folder?
No. Sometime it's just a single file in the desktop.
Even if the JPEG file is just 100kb or 20MB, same slow opening.

Although, I think I now understand what you meant earlier (when you asked "even the second time?").
I noticed that the other files I open after does open faster than the first time. Take about 2-3 secs. Is this normal?
I mean, I'm used to opening files instantly (using XNView Classic).
If 2-3 secs is the normal speed, then i guess this is ok for now.

However, I just had this issue earlier. I can't Drag & Drop my AI files directly from XNViewMP Browser to Adobe Illustrator (already opened).
What happens is the file becomes a Text format with the File Path (not the AI file itself).
I have found an old Topic here:
https://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic. ... or#p156325
Just want to know if this is already fixed?

Thanks again and have a nice day. :)

Good day again!

Just want to follow up re: my issue on XnViewMP Drag & Drop file.
Still can't drag and drop files as the file becomes a link / path in text.
Example when I drag 7 drop a PNG / JPEG file to Adobe AI, the file becomes a path (text format).
Just now, i also experienced the same when I dragged & dropped a JPEG file to my WORD document.
Let me know if there is a fix for this.

On a side note, if you can also address my XnVies Classic issue (thread below) where previewing files just opens and closes right away.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

Cheers!

could you try to rename the xnview.ini?

Hi Pierre!

Apologies for replying just now.
Just want to let you know that renaming the xnview.ini worked!
My XnView Classic is working like a charm now.

On a side note, I've let go of the XnViewMP.
It's really a great Image Viewer and all, but sadly it's preview has been lagging for me.
Opening a small JPEG file sometimes takes 4-10 secs now, and sometimes 3 secs.
It really varies, on what factor I don't know.

Still, I'm very happy to be able to use XnView Classic once again.
Keep up the great work Pierre!
Cheers!

Hi Pierre!

Yup. Sadly it takes that long. Fastest so far is 3-4 secs. Even for a small file.
Unlike the XnView Classic, it's instantaneous. Like, double-click on a JPEG/ GIF / even a large PSD file and it's there right away.

Anyway, I'm using Xnview Classic now. But with just a minor glitch with the AI & EPS files...
I tried installing the latest GhostScript (tried both 32-bit & 63-bit versions) and it didn't work.
So now I'm currently using the old 8.54 (32-bit) version because that's the only version that works.
My issue now is everytime I right click on an .AI or .EPS file and select "Open with XnView Classic for Windows", XnView Classic opens in Browser Mode (with the last folder that I opened). Meaning, it didn't even open on the Folder where I right-clicked the .AI or .EPS from.

I'm using a Windows 10 64-Bit version.

Can you help me if there's a setting for this one where I can view any AI or EPS file on Preview Mode just like before?

Thanks again. Cheers!

Good day!

Update on the issue above.
So I noticed that the only files affected are the AI, EPS and PDF files. I figured it was connected with Ghostscript somehow.
I did a clean reinstall of the the XnView Classic and the Ghostscript.
Now, all seemed to be working ok.

Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Cheers!
