[REQ] More user friendly check for updates, please

Post by V@no »

Hello.
I'm so glad XnView is being updated quiet frequently - it means it's constantly improving even though it's already near-perfect software :mrgreen:

One thing could be improved - the check for updates feature. Currently when there is an update it displays an "alert" box about the update with a "ok" button, that's it...well, cool, there is an update, now what?
xnview.png
What it missing on that alert box is:
1) information on what is the current version and what is the new version
2) a link to the download page or at least to home page. Or instead of a "ok" button show two buttons with a question "do you want download update?" with Yes/No buttons
3) display changes log, or a link to the latest changes log, so the user could decide if they want get the update or not.
[EDIT]
4) ability temporary disable check for updates for NN days/weeks/month/until computer reboots
[/EDIT]
As an example here is how it looks like in UEStudio update notification:

The blue link opens download page.

Thank you.

At least make it stop checking and popup that useless and extremely annoying popup every time XnView started. The settings says check for updates daily, not every freaking time it starts...

Yes, it was. Now seems to stop, but it pops up every day anyway. Still absolutely useless and annoying popup. The only solution is to disable update check.

Coming up 3 years since this topic started, I guess it will never happen.

P.S.
Btw, latest v1.99.6 uses duncan.xnview.com domain for updates check, but the requested file is not available there.

I meant xnview itself. When it checks for updates, it connects to duncan.xnview.com where file with latest versions information (I don't want post it's name) doesn't exist. That file, however, exists at xnview.com
I mentioned this just in case you guys are not aware of this.

But that is besides the point of this topic ;)

But xnview.com redirect to duncan.xnview.com, xnview check for xnview.com not duncan

I don't understand why you have the popup

I don't have a need for this, xnview is not frequently updated, also it's not like a browser where updates are needed for security reasons. I can understand why this feature keeps getting pushed behind more important features.
Maybe someone else can help write this module to be included? It can be a separate exe.

@xnview:
it's possible, that I'm confused about how frequent it was showing update popup message, because I have xnview on several computers, perhaps it was on more then one computer a day I was using...anyhow, this topic is about the message itself and common sense convenience ;)

@obelisk:
If you don't need this feature, then why replying? Also, XnView already has all the capability to improve the message, it's probably matter of 10-30 minutes to add it...unfortunately it seems XnViewMP is stealing 99% of development attention while the original XnView, that is 100 times better is left behind. And no offense, but with your logic, you most probably don't even need XnView, because I doubt you use/have 400+ image formats, so why bother with supporting so many formats, right? ;)
