I also like Dreamer's approach. Besides, the number of Filetypes available in "Most used formats" should be reduced a lot.

If possible a good solution should make it into XnView 1.80. The way it is now is in the current release candidates 1-4 is not so good.

In RC4, you can choose file type wanted in save dialog.

Where do I find the option for setting this?

It's at the bottom of the Write list (Options -> Write -> File Types)
AMD Ryzen 3 3300X 3.8Ghz, 16Gb DDR4, RX6600XT with Dell U2520D at 2560x1440@60Hz scaling 125%
Windows 11 Pro x64 23H2, Listary Pro, PowerToys and Wintoys

Well hidden. Shouldn't this at least move to the top of the category "Write"?

Or even back to the main level were it was originally? Sure enough some people mixed up file types and associations, but I think that had various reasons, one was the position of the category and the other one the unclear explanations in the option panels of file types and associations. See topic Wishlist: simplified file associations.

If we can't find a common agreement and solution quickly, we should move it at least at the top of category "Write".

Ok, perhaps better at the top. Anyone agree?
Pierre.

Yes, I agree.
I had trouble finding it myself.

Yes, maybe move it to the main level - join with Write, there is just one entry there ([x] If no extension, add it).

The Write panel is pretty empty, that's true. But combining the two panels will make them a bit less clear. For 1.80 we should keep them separate.
