After all these years, I am still able to hold down SHIFT key whilst opening multiple selected files. This then causes XnView MP to open the image files in separate tabs :D :D

I believe it stemmed from this old topic:
viewtopic.php?t=24968

I think more awareness should be made about this feature, perhaps a printed message giving this tip in the Settings>Interface>Tabs

Furthermore as a suggestion, perhaps these ini Tweaks could be placed in a tab of the About menu
