1.6.1 Unsharp/blurry picture zoom out

Post by Lanny676 »

Not sure if this ongoing problem is going to be fixed in 1.6.2, but I realized that pictures are getting less detailed when they are get slightly zoomed out due to 'adjust height/length' settings. In various posts there are discussions about Lanczos implementation not correctly working, zoom levels resetting and so on. If you use 'open with system program' (F3 default) while viewing a picture, it opens with Windows Photo App, or in another use case Pictureflect Photo Viewer - in which both are correctly showing the image fine without blur.

To reproduce view all of them on a portrait format monitor (pivot turned 90 degrees) and view each of them in XnView and another image viewer of your choice (in my case Windows Photo or Pictureflect Image Viewer).

Any input on that? I also remember it worked fine on the 0.98.2 version of it in the past, but it seems not to do so when I downgrade now.

In the attachment I've attached samples:
- XnView Original.png
XnView Original.png
is the original file sample.

- XnView Pictureflect (Windows Photo or similiar).png
XnView Pictureflect (Windows Photo or similiar).png
is a printscreen of the original file in another functional viewer than XnView (Printscreen was taken from a 1080x1920 monitor turned pivot)

- Xnview Xnview.png
Xnview Xnview.png
is a printscreen of the original file in XnView - it's not a strong blur in this one it depends on image quality and size, but you can notice it on her left eye (top right panel) and in general the text getting slighty 'out of focus'.

XnView Settings.png
This was the setting I used, but it doesn't affect either way even when I choose another one like none, bilinear etc. The sharpening setting doesn't seem to have an effect either - after changing a setting I also close XnView and start again to be sure it applies.
I also tested with creating a new 'xnview.ini' and it doesn't seem to work there either.

Posts like this one brought be to this topic, if the '99% zoom bug' was ever really fixed.

As I thought the 1.6.2 fixed a different bug (I didn't understand completely what the problem there was viewtopic.php?f=62&t=46370, but I looked it up again and understood it).

So still, it's the same problem on 1.6.2 and I also tested on a different device (notebook) connected to the monitor - the same is happening there too.

Only the 'None' filtering method looks different, but worse than all of them. The other methods look the same compared to each other. 'Sharpen' doesn't do anything.
The monitor got a default 100% scaling in Windows (1080x1920) and a second device with just default settings connected to the monitor for testing purposes does the same result.
Also when zooming in the picture a bit, instead of out (by mousewheel or other zoom functions) it gets cleary sharper, as in there seems to be a problem with the sharpness of images as soon the zoom reaches below 100%.
Xnview Zoom Compare.png
-The left one is the 'XnView Original.png' zoomed in by mouse wheel one time and took a screenshot while fullscreen.
-The right one is 'Xnview Xnview.png'.

This comparison is also made by opening both pictures in Firefox as separate tabs and +/- adjust size and position (it's not perfect, but there is clearly more sharpening on the left image mostly on the text and eye).

I've found that using other viewers like Windows Photo or Pictureflect Image Viewer does display images correctly. I haven't tried version 1.6.2, but it's worth keeping an eye on updates to see if they address this problem. Downgrading to 0.98.2 might be a temporary workaround if image quality is crucial for your work.

About that downgrade, and yes I already wrote about how Windows Photo/Pictureflect display clearer.

I converted the 'XnView Original.png' with GIMP into 'XnView Original 24bit.bmp'. Opening this bmp image then in XnView does show it correctly.
Xnview Xnview 24bit.png
(The 'XnView Original 24bit.bmp' image was too large to upload with +7Mb, this one is again the image opened in Xnview and screenshotted while fullscreen. Compared with the previous ones it does look correct).
So it seems to be a problem with low color depths? (The original picture is 8bit).

yes the problem is because it's a 8bits+colormap picture. 8bits grey or 24bits dont have this problem...

I've encountered this bug as well, also while reading similiar source material as the original bug reporter. Other image viewers don't seem to be affected by this and can handle the format fine. Is there an estimation when a bug fix is getting released? I saw new bug reports getting opened and basically answered/fixed in a matter of a few days - this one looks to be rather on the more forgotten side, if this is the case I just wanted to remind of it again.
Thank you in advance.
