I'm putting this in 'support' rather than 'suggestions' because the feature may already exist. If it doesn't I'll repeat this post in the 'suggestions' forum.
I've tried to do this but failed, please excuse my failure if the feature already exists.
Is it possible to configure XnView so that when dealing with files on an external drive, it looks for, and creates, thumbnails on that same external drive?
This would be useful for the following reasons:
*) Somebody may be using a very large external drive because they have a very small internal drive. The thumbnail file may grow very large, and it would be better to have it on the large-capacity external drive.
*) The thumbnails will be on the same drive as the images, which seems like a good idea for various reasons...
*) The external drive could be used on another computer running XnView, and the thumbnails wouldn't need to be re-generated.
*) The external drive could be used on another compuer *with a different operating system* running XnView, and the thumbnails wouldn't need to be regenerated (if they are stored in same format in Linux, MacOS and Windows - I don't know?)
*) If the drive has encryption (I have a Samsung T7 Touch with fingerprint reader) then the thumbnails would only be on that drive and also be encrypted, same as the images.
I can see this being problematic, from basic stuff like what if the drive letter or name is changed, and how can you define when a drive is 'external' / removable.
But is this doable, or are there workarounds to get similar results, or would this be a valid feature request if it isn't currently there?
Thank you!
