Batch annotation

Post by Dominius »

I think IrfanView is beating out XnView MP in this one area.
I'd like to be able to add one (Caption Writer) to a bunch of new JPEG files but I can't find anywhere in the app that enables batch annotations.

Any help here will be much appreciated.

I suppose you want to write some IPTC fields to a batch of images?

Select the images (Use also "View > Show files in subfolders" if needed)

Metadata > Edit IPTC
-First, check Options tab :
"Keep original value if new value is empty" and "Don't load field values" should be enabled
"Mode" must be selected (IPTC only ? or IPTC+xmp ?)

- Then Choose the field you want to use to enter text
... maybe "Caption Writer" in Caption tab ... (exiftool syntax is IPTC:Writer-Editor)
... or "Byline" in Credits tab ... (exiftool syntax IPTC:By-line)
... ( see also "Where and what to save" from Bogdan Hrastnik https://exiftool.org/gui/articles/where_what.html IPTC section)
and "Write to all files" "Ok" buttons

How often do you need to use this? (you can create a button in the main toolbar)

Another way
-Select photos
Metadata > Transfer
> Add
>> IPTC-IIM
>>> Caption Writer
Write your text in the box (... or use another source of data such as folder name or anything else with drop down arrow ?)

and apply

Batch annotation of a file metadata field, see michel038's post above?

Or batch annotation of the [same?] free text, which should be possible [for the same text] using Tools > Batch convert... ?
