is there any way to disable the automatic check for updates via Group Policy, i.e. a registry key that I could delete or alter?

Yeah, but I want to distribute that setting to 5000 computers, so I am searching for something that I can deploy via GPO.

Not a 100% sure yet, but I think I found the solution:
I can deploy the xnview.ini with the checkFreq=0 value!
