Hello, I am using XnView MP for Mac v1.5.2. I want to load a RAF 40Mb raw image (6000x4000), crop it to a selection, and then Save selection as JPEG. When I do this the resultant file is 116kb and looks bad. I was really hoping to get a nice quality JPEG cropped to my liking. How do I keep the original resolution but still do a crop? I feel I must be missing something.
I noticed when the original file is loaded in XnView, it shows as 1920x1280x48 (1.5) in the information bar along the bottom of the window. So possibly the quality is lost when loading the original image, not when cropping? And if so, why? As XnView seems to be able to easily load large files such as 6000x4000 JPEG file and then crop it as expected without losing resolution.
RAF file quality lost when loading?

Please check File > Format settings... > Read > Camera RAW tab > Use dropdown
Possibly some form of pop-up warning, or a chance to select the image opening mode, could be displayed when opening a RAW file?

Re: RAF file quality lost when loading?
When I use Format Settings..., for Camera Raw I changed the dropdown to "Full Size", closed the app, reopened, checked the setting, the setting indeed says Full Size. But when I go to open the file it still comes up looking smaller and in the information bar says 1920x1280x48. ??

Re: RAF file quality lost when loading?
I can't explain the pixel dimensions you are seeing if the original image is the size you state, and AFAIK XnView software still only supports 24-bit depth, but that shouldn't explain the quality loss you see, however the file size looks small for a typical image.
You might therefore take a look at the File > Format settings... > Write > JPEG tab and check the settings. Is Use estimated quality (when possible) possibly set, although that normally refers to the estimated JPEG quality?
There are also other options on the File > Format settings... > Read tab so you might also consider whether one of those options might provide at least a partial explanation.

In Format Settings Read there are settings for "RAW" that say Width / Height and they are set to 256 (default values, I'm sure). What do these do and might they have any bearing on the results?

With 'embedded preview', the RAF is loaded as 6016x4014

Settings View Camera RAW says Embedded Preview. Previously I was looking at Settings Format Read Camera RAW, which has the same dropdown options.
Now, when I change Settings View Camera RAW to Full size, it then loads it full size.
(But it sounds like you are saying your loaded full size when set to Embedded Preview? That was not the case for me. I am using Mac version, btw.)
