Re: What's the recommended file list
MP4 Files is a video file container only (like mkv). You can check the used video codec and audio codec within the mp4 file.
Maybe it is an exotic format or you do not have installed the right video codecs on your computer.
You can check the used video and audio codec of the file with:
MediaInfo:

A good choice for problems with video/audio playback problems are the lav filters.
They are used in different video players to playback many different file formats.

Re: What's the recommended file list
I figured it was about video codecs. I use MPC-HC as a player normally. It's fine there and on WMP. Does it use the same stuff?
Re: What's the recommended file list
I use the MPC Player, too.
The MPC Player has an internal video and audio filter for correct playback of files.
It is a good universal video/audio player for different formats.
That is the reason, why it works with your files. It is based on the latest lav filters.
I think XnViewMP use the same video/audio filters from december 2020.
They should playback most of the video/audio files.
Can you tell me, which video/audio codecs are used in your video file?
In MPC Player you can check the file properties in one of the menus.
These informations could help:
Video:
Resolution (width/height):
Video codec:
Bitrate/s:
FPS (Frames per second):
Audio:
Audio codec:
Bitrate:
Channels (mono, stereo, 5.1, etc.):
Maybe I have a file with the same properties for testing it in XnViewMP.
