Help! I get a 7-second delay when I browse in large folders

Post by Lee James »

My main photos folder contains many sub folders (about 4,000 in total).

Whenever I go into one of the sub-folders, then come back up into the main folder, there's always a delay of about 7 seconds during which the program freezes. It's very annoying because XnView is incredibly fast in all other ways.

I'm guessing the problem is that it's scanning the entire folder every time? Is there any way to make it keep this data in RAM, so it doesn't have to re-scan every time?

I'm not sure how to do that. But I really like having thumbnails for folders. And I don't think that can be causing the problem anyway, because the thumbnails don't even start generating until after the 7 second pause.

It's only a test, in settings>File list>Custom filter, you desactivate all for video

OK I'd like to try this but I can't turn off thumbnails on folders.

In the Custom Filter settings, I disabled video thumbnails as you said, but it made no difference. I don't have any videos in those folders so I wouldn't have expected it to make a difference.

And I can't disable the images checkboxes because they're ghosted.
Sorry my fault, not for video for folder

OK I turned off folder thumbnails but it doesn't make any difference. There's still a 7-second pause before it changes to the parent directory.

The program must be somehow scanning all 4,000 subdirectories every time rather than remembering them.

so 'show as thumbnails' is unchecked for Folders? Are you in thumbnail mode?

I've tried with a lot of subfolders, and no delay here

OK I'm still doing some experimenting…

I set up a folder with 4,000 empty folders and there was less than 1 second delay, even with thumbnails.

I then copied over half of my photo collection, and the delay was still less than a second, with thumbnails.

So now I'm just working out what could be causing it to slow. I'll let you know when I've figured it out. Thanks :)
