Re: 0.66 categories no more!
q: how would i import a categories file if i didn't make one with MP 0.64?
I can't even make a new category when I right click in the filters tab
my images are tagged in xmp side car files right? so why doesn't MP 0.66 find those?
yes, XMP in the side bar tab shows the keywords - "hierarchicalSubject[1]" but not in filters of categories tab

...Hello, ... even with a clear xnview.ini file? (FYI: you can rename it to rebuild it)

Re: 0.66 categories no more!
do you have saved your .db? could you send me your xnview.db, please?
Pierre.
Re: 0.66 categories no more!
Hi Pierre,
the db got re-made when I launched 0.66 (I think -at least, the Thumb.db got wiped), and no I didn't backup recently, totally forgot . the XnView.db is now 191mb, really send it?
it resembles a problem on another laptop, which I haven't had time to ask for help on, cannot add categories to the db from loaded files, nor from right click in filter pane.

Re: 0.66 categories no more!
Haha, I sorted it out (and quite thankfully too)
I changed the db location and restarted XnViewMP, and hey presto, a new db was made, and categories getting added from files.
looks like Xnview is getting better all the time, well done on all the hard work!
I'll be back with some bugs I found....

Don't worry if Thumb.db was deleted. There is nothing in there except the thumbs. Ok, it is better to have them, but nothing which it couldn't be generated again.

Oops, I just found out..
Optimize: clean files - this actually wiped clean my thumb.db !!!!!! with no warning
-Delete all has no confirm dialogue either!
sure, it isn't the end of the world when the thumbs are wiped, but it shouldn't need doing every day!

Re: 0.66 categories no more!
Hi again,
any easy way to rebuild the db? not just because I messed up but what about starting fresh on a new PC?
Aha, the "add folder" button... it works nicely and it was staring at me.

Re: 0.66 categories no more!
continuing this thread...
1. Categories Management: Clear all - removes the entire list!
-I expected this to only clean categories from the selected files, not the whole list.
(I had tried Tools > Metadata > Clean > check IPTC, but it didn't remove keywords data)
after doing that I then imported my saved list, but then now I can't filter any category (all empty) - urrrgh
-now I browse a folder and no files are added categories - what? will it demand wiping the db and start re-adding folders?? "rebuild thumbnails" doesn't repopulate the categories
2. Optimize : you need to add a little definition, like:
-Clean thumbnails (erase all thumbnail images from db!)
-Clean files (remove all files from db!)
3. the webp thumbs makes a massive difference with db disk usage - Thumbs.db is down to 198mb, when before it was way over 3gb. fast too and the quality loss is not too noticed.

Re: 0.66 categories no more!
I repopulated the categories after,
-optimize -clean files, clean thumbs
-rebuild thumbnails
lots of work after "cleaning" (aka destroying) my categories list!

Re: 0.66 categories no more!
1. Perhaps you should read this also: http://www.xnview.com/wiki/index.php/Ca ... _XnView_MP
"...Aend Ah told tou Pierr tou put tez linkz oen teh mein peige..."
(Unfortunately) for the time being there is no command for clear categories from the Selected Files. The easiest way is to select the desired files and click all the categories from the 'Assigned' set in the Category Sets pane. Clicking on the categories toggles the assignment state, hence clicking on the assigned categories will un-assign them.
2. For...
In short:
Clean files: - does NOT remove all files from DB! It removes only the ones which does NOT have catalog info! (catalog here = rating/color/keywords)
Clean Thumbs - usually (if one knows what he's doing) has a very good effect, especially when you have 10000000 thumbs and you routinely look only at 10000 of them.
3. webp - The advantage over JPEG compression is not only on disk usage. The main advantage is that being much smaller, much much more thumbs will be cached in memory. Hence if the other programs (eg. Lightroom, ACDSee, ASP etc.) will start to crawl at 10-20-50.000 images, XnView MP will scale much much better. Now, at the time of writing I have in DB 166.211 images and everything is real-time.
