Sir,
I have some questions about Categories, as shown in the Info windows with Properties/Histogram/EXIF/IPTC/XMP/Exiftool/Categories
With XNView old version I have created a list of categories. It is now available to XNviewMP. Where is it stored ?
Q1 : is it possible to edit this file with Notepad or another tool ?
Q2 : Is there a way to generate a list of keywords based on files present in a folder ?
Q3 : Is there an automatic way to correct wrong keywords by just updating the value shown on the categories list ?
Regards, Philippe

Perhaps do you want to say it is NOT available to XnViewMP, right? With XNView old version I have created a list of categories. It is now available to XNviewMP. Where is it stored ?
Because the list of categories is, in fact, a table in XnView's database. The database "layouts" (or schema, for the geeks) are different between the two programs.
Nope. But it would be a very good feature and easy to implement. (It needs only to be attentive at tab identation to mark the tree structure using the same engine which is used to build the tree which you mention in the Info pane). <musings> ...Perhaps even a simple 'Copy Tree' menu option would be ok? </musings> And this is very important not only because of XnView <-> XnViewMP but also for Lightroom, IDImager, AfterShotPro (etc. etc. etc.) which all allow text import/export of keywords. Perhaps I should start a new thread with this.Q1 : is it possible to edit this file with Notepad or another tool ?
From XnViewMP? To "generate"? No. But...Q2 : Is there a way to generate a list of keywords based on files present in a folder ?
You can see them. Go to your desired folder. Select all. Look at the Categories tree in the Info pane. The keywords which are assigned for all files have a Checked checkbox, the ones which are assigned for some files have a Grayed checkbox. The others are unchecked.
Depends.Q3 : Is there an automatic way to correct wrong keywords by just updating the value shown on the categories list ?
The keywords are kept in the DB by reference, hence if you change the value in the "categories list" then automagically all the photos will display the new value and everything is Ok.
However...
...I think that the problem appears when there are sidecars (XMP files etc.) which have these keywords inside. I don't know if these are updated.
Nice questions, Philippe, nice questions...
