Hello. My thumbs.db file has grown to 20GB in size. I have a small SSD for my OS drive and need to shrink this file, and then prevent it from growing again.
I've gone into the database options and deleted all the thumbs from in there, turned off caching etc, and still I have a 20GB file.
What can I do?
how to reduce thumbs.db size?

Tools | Settings | Database | Optimize...
Check the Optimize (long process)
And after that isn't needed to turn off the caching, just put a max size for you database in the same Settings page.

Re: how to reduce thumbs.db size?
i've done that. every option under "optimize" is checked, and when i hit "ok" the process completes immediately, probably because having deleted all the thumbnails there's nothing there for it to optimize. i still have a 20GB file.
also the maximum size for cached thumbnails is set to 100MB, and the database size to 50MB, and i don't recall changing these (although i may have). it certainly doesn't appear to have paid any attention to these limits, unless they refer to something else or are used in some other way.
there's a thing that says "cache size 232.00KiB - 18.79GiB", is this saying it's aware that it's got a 20GB file but is only using 232K of it?
i really need to make this file go away now, i've got less than 2GB free on my system drive

Re: how to reduce thumbs.db size?
seems i can just delete the file and xnviewmp creates a new one when it next runs. problem solved, for now, but i'd like to be certain that this won't happen again in a few weeks time...

Re: how to reduce thumbs.db size?
i've set the "maximum size for cached thumbnails" to 1MB, and after browsing just a few folders my thumbs.db file is 250MB. i can cope with that size, but it shows no correlation to the max size i specified in the settings, and there's nothing to suggest it won't grow further as i browse more folders.
either something isn't clear here (is that max size per thumb? per folder? total?), or the max size is being ignored completely. a setting for the maximum overall size of this cache file, that prevents it from growing beyond the specified size, is what is needed.
