Registering Glitch

This will I'm sure seem a petty issue, but when it happens during ANY registration/ signup process, it is very annoying. We KNOW we've entered the silly usually letter/number combination correctly, but repeatedly get an Error reply. You ask for the first 3, and last 2 in a string of characters. This string ends with ":", the colon character. Suggestion is to remove the colon, or note that it is to be ignored!, otherwise your'e wasting the interested user's time. Thanks.
