0.81 x64: Slow start

Post by daninet »

Dear xnView,

I went through all the similar topic to find any help, did all the suggestion but no luck, so I decided to open a topic for it.

I am experiencing super slow start of the images view window. It means 14-16 seconds approx after closing the program. No matter if the software opened first time or not.
I did a fresh install of windows 10 x64 and a fresh install of xnview.

I have unchecked check update, load the next image, no ICC profile, no sync of browser selection. And all the suggestions mentioned here http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=32473
I don't have any plugins.

Images are located on secondary internal drive, system and xnview installed on SSD. 5th gen i7 cpu, 16Gb RAM, quadro k2000
Images are JPG, 12Mpx resolution, 5-8Mb size.
Every other software opens images instantly.

I'm looking forward to any suggestion.

All other functions are correct? You have a problem only when loading the picture file?
Could you try t create a folder, and copy one of your image, same problem?

I have copied one image to the SSD and the result is the same. Apart from that software works fine.

I have this same problem.
Slow start but a think the problem is loading view tree
I using portable version x64 and if I close tree view is okey open only image (start is normal), but if a navigate after tree loading program is long started.
Delete ini, key in regedit noting resolved this problem only close tree view.

I found another problem if tumbs is large reading image is too very long (Pictures about 1200 normal size about 4MB phone quality)
Now i set tumbs 128x96 and loading acceptably.
This is not HDD performance issuing, xnviewmp process think about 10sek CPU load 20% disk 0% load

Do you have a lot of network drive/share?

If thumbnail is large, XnView need to load full image, and resize it, it can't use embedded thumbnail...

Okey I understand. but not large (128x96) this same operation in explorer is fastest.

Ps. I make to you video :) then see you exactly how it looks.

Just to help others who may experience this issue:

 What actually helped in my case was deleting the xnview.ini (that over years has grown to 25,5 kb) and setting up XnViewMP from scratch. I tried to recreate all the previous settings which resulted in the xnview.ini size 12,9 kb. The annoyance on slow start is gone (and I've been experiencing that for a long, long time across many versions).

just to report, I am using 0.82 XnViewMP x64 windows 10 home,
and was experiencing a very similar problem.

-- Environment for the problem:-
Previously I was using XnView 2.36, then due to the need of the UTF8 path name, I changed to XnViewMP.
It seems initially I have not associate files correctly to the MP after installation.
I am using 0.82 XnViewMP x64 on a windows 10 home, with quick SSD disks.
The folder I tested has 10000 files and size of 10GB.
I have use thumb cache with high quality jpg thumb, then I set the thumb size to 220x220 and start with everything default.
When I use XnViewMP, I sorted the file by date.

-- Uses scenario :-
When I double click and open a file from the file explorer, the file open very slowly, i need to wait for about 8 sec.
This is not due to file system because other software open the same file fine and quick.
When I double click the image in Viewer, I goes to the Browser nearly after 8 sec.
When I click another image in the Browser, it opens another Viewer tab after 8 sec.

-- Trial solution:-
I re-associate all the image file types with the MP in options.
I try double-click all image types in that folder in file explorer, and then re-associates to the MP is it asks me.
I regenerate all the thumbnails in MP options.
I remove the sort file inside the folder.
Suddenly up to a point, I find that the opening of file no longer lag, for both Viewer and Browser; then the problem seems to be gone for the moment.
Even when I sort the file in different way, the response is still very quick, like 0.5 sec.
I cannot repeat the problem again at the moment, and I dont know how I fixed it.

Now I am using the MP very smoothly, I shall come back to here to report if I encounter the same problem again.

Today the slow problem came back out of no where.
Then I tried it a bit, what I experienced is exactly we talked about before.
The Browser open is slow, the Viewer open is slow, and the changes between Browser and Viewer is also slow,
with the title bar showing "no response".

I just did 1 thing and then the slowness is gone again.
I just deleted the file .XnViewSort in the image folder which has 10k images,
then the slow start problem is gone.
I cannot exactly repeat the error, any sorting seems working fine now.

hope this helps.
