0.92 Crash at startup

Post by herb »

Hello Pierre,

on my Windows 7 64-bit system since a very long time I have very very sporadically problems with XnViewMP (also 64-bit) at startup.
XnViewMP crashes at startup and only at startup. As I said: very very sporadic.

All the time I could not find a specific file or directory that could cause the crash.
And I also could not find a "golden rule" that says "to this ..." and the crash will happen.

Now I did some tests with files that came from the full Exiftool distribution. Each file is very small, because not the image itself is interesting, but the metadata are the point of interest.
Here I found a set of files that causes XnViewMP to crash at startup.
XnViewMP does not crash when I switch from one directory into this specific directory.
Starting XnViewMP - with this directory to open at startup - GUI comes up and XnViewMP starts to read the files and to create the thumbnails for each file. Then suddenly XnViewMP crashes.

Please retry with the attached files. Thanks in advance.

Best regards
Herb

Hello Pierre,

yes, I have the crash always when I doubleclick XnViewMP to start the application, and XnViewMP will open the directory.

Pierre,

there is a similar problem with the Linux versions. On my Ubuntu 64bit 0.92 also crashes in connection with specific directories. The crash occurs while the Browser window is parsing the files. So it's because of one specific file or because of the magnitude of the files.

Error message is
#15 0x00007f2f1016041d in clone () at ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/x86_64/clone.S:109
XnView crashed with SIGABRT in __malloc_assert()

Are you able to find the file?

Trying ...

After copying the whole directory contents to a different location (new folder):
New error:
*** Error in '/opt/XnView/XnView': free(): corrupted unsorted chunks

I then removed the files in groups trying to isolate the file causing the problem. After some time I could identify the attached TIF. It was sent by a colleague so I don't know of the origin of the file.

The same file and every copy thereof also crashes 0.92 on Windows 7. GIMP opens the file just fine on both Linux and Windows.

Let me know what's wrong with it :-)

Hello Pierre,

thanks that you tried to reproduce the error.
So I guess there might be a timing (or similar) problem on my system when I start XnViewMP.

Is there any possibility to collect more and better symptoms?

Best regards

A problem inside the file (incorrect data) or a problem inside XnView (bug)?

Hello Pierre,
Are you able to isolate the file?
As always said, when I have XnViewMP running and I change to the directory with the "problematic images", no error occurs.
So for me it is not possible to isolate such a specific file.

You are right, there must be a specific problematic file; so I guess, this file and also the conditions of starting XnViewMP cause the error.

Best regards
