Hello, I have similar problem with version 0.72 x64 (Dec 19 2014) on Windows 8.1.
When I open *.jpg from Total Commander and than double click to switch to browser it crash. Next time when I open XnViewMP from shortcut it keep crashing until set PathBrowser in xnview.ini to empty or if I set start folder to empty.
