IPTC tagging from EXIF partially working

Post by Arrvon »

Hi all, first I just wanted to give a huge thanks to those who have put in the time to develop such a magnificent program!

On to my 'issue'.

I have been trying to get a program to be able to batch add keyword metadata tags based on the exif data 'make' and 'model'. My hope is to highlight an entire folder of images, and batch process them so that they are all tagged based on the exif 'make' and 'model' of camera. Normally we would just add these tags by typing them in manually with batch add iptc, but I shoot different cameras and have the ability to set up different exif data IN camera depending on what lens I shoot. This results in a lot of different combinations of exif data under the 'model' (changes with each lens i have on camera). So my goal is to try and have the program, in this case xnviewMP, that can add iptc tags directly from EXIF data.

Now I HAVE had success doing this in xnview already, using the batch convert. I took a group of RAW DNG files, and converted them to JPG. While doing so, I used the batch IPTC/XMP feature built into the conversion tool, and under 'keyword', I entered the following:

{EXIF:Make}{EXIF:Model}

This resulted in the successful creating of JPG with the make and model tags! Awesome I thought. But unfortunately this isn't how I want my workflow to go, since I want to edit my RAW images first, and then save them to JPG. I was hoping to find a way to do the same process, but with JPG instead of the DNG to JPG batch conversion process.

So I tried to select a bunch of already processed JPG files, and instead of batch convert (I didn't want to re-save the as JPG and lose image quality), I chose TOOLS/Metadata/Edit IPTC/XMP. This brought up much the same interface as I used in the earlier batch conversion (DNG to JPG). However, and here is the possible bug?, this time, when I added {EXIF:Make}{EXIF:Model} in the keyword area, and tried to complete the batch tagging, it didn't work :(

Instead of pulling the correct tags from the EXIF data, it simply tagged each JPG with '{EXIF:Make}{EXIF:Model}'.

Is there a bug or some other reason why this tagging method works when doing a batch conversion from DNG to JPG, but not when just using the batch edit IPTC feature on it's own?

I am not a seasoned xnview expert, so perhaps there is a workaround or fix that someone could point me to in case I am missing something.

Thanks, and best regards,

Ryan
