Free Adobe Photoshop Plug-Ins

Post by helmut »

XnView supports and integrates Adobe 8bf plug-ins, described in topic Integrating Adobe filters.

I'm not deep in graphic manipulation, but I wonder whether there are good free Adobe plug-ins around. So far I have heard of:

- Harrys Filter (The Plugin Site) Partly Freeware
- opticVerve Labs (OpticVerve's virtualPhotographer) Freeware

Does anyone know good *free* Adobe 8BF filters?

      • ScreenWorks – Simple Pattern Generation Image
        A single Photoshop-compatible plug-in with 30 options for creating screen/mesh patterns.
It provides you with a quick way to add small detailed and repetitive texture overlay effects to areas of your image in one easy step. The single slider setting gives you the option to add the chosen pattern on top of your image, or make the layer background white.
      • EmbossWorks – Classic Variations Image
A single Photoshop-compatible plug-in with 20 effects for producing various quick and easy embossing styles. They are handy when you need to add a sense of depth or relief to an otherwise flat image.

      • Mezzy – Artistic Grain Image
A single Photoshop-compatible plug-in with 15 effects for creating a selection of simple grain and mezzo styles. Give your photos a new look with these various effects.
    • Fotomatic
      • Hi-Spot – High-Contrast Mono Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for high contrast black and white photos.
It will not just convert your images into the standard shades of grey, it will automatically higher the contrast and produce a more dramatic sense of lighting in your scene. Much like the old classic B&W photos you may have seen in your family albums.
A bonus features for darkroom enthusiasts is the ability to lightly tone your B&W print at the same time. Give your photos that ancient sepia look or mix the colour settings to produce your desired monochrome tint.
      • G-Force – Classic Film Grain Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for traditional monochromatic grain effects.
It produces results similar to using “fast” B&W camera film, allowing more control than the standard “noise” filters included with most image-editors.
Give your photos back some of that artistic texture which seems to be sadly missing these days! Ideal for both landscape scenes or portraits.
      • Techni-X – Mono Repro FX Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for very high contrast B&W effects which are ideal for certain illustration work.
It bleaches out most of the mid-tone greys, leaving crisp dark blacks and bright clean whites. It will produce clear B&W images with limited tones which are suitable for cheap reproduction via the office photocopier or when published in newsprint, as these methods normally loose image definition when trying to reproduce standard colour photographs.
Although mainly designed for this “technical” purpose, you can also have fun by adding strong colour-casts within the plug-in!
      • NightScope – Low-Light Enhancement Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for adding a basic “night-vision” effect to your digital photographs and/or 2D and 3D computer-generated images.
It first removes all colour from the picture and gives a very slight blur to indicate the camera is trying hard to focus in a low-light situation. Then you can choose to add grain either keeping it B&W or mixing separate red, green and blue channels to vary the effect.
You can also produce a strong overall colour cast using the RGB sliders provided. Works best with dark night-time photographs that have minimal areas of bright background elements in the scene.
      • Pseudo-IR – B&W Film Reproduction Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for creating a similar look when using traditional B&W infra-red film.
It is not an exact match but will provide you with a quick and easy way to re-create the effect digitally using your standard colour photographs. The RGB sliders will also allow you to tint the overall image if you wish.
For best results use this filter on landscape scenes. It is also quite effective on certain architectural elements too. Not really suitable for portrait subjects though.
      • SkyGrad – Optical Gradient Filter Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for tinting the sky area of your photographs.
Ideal if you need to change the “mood” of your scene, brighten-up a dull day or make a darker overcast sky for dramatic effect.
The filter will overlay a coloured gradient from the top of your image fading to transparent at the bottom. You can specify the colour of the tint via three RGB sliders and adjust the brightness with the exposure setting.
      • BW-Plus – Optical Filters For B&W Image
A single Photoshop compatible plug-in filter for quickly turning your colour images into greyscale, but with the added option of using a coloured optical lens filter as you would in traditional B&W photography.
The different colours will change the tonal range during the greyscale conversion: for example, a red filter will lighten the red, magenta and yellow areas plus darken the green, blue and cyan in the photo.
There are 6 preset effects to choose from using a simple drop-down menu (Windows only – Mac versions come as 6 individual filters without dialog boxes).
      • FastFix – Image Correction Image
A single Photoshop-compatible plug-in filter to help you quickly access the most common image enhancement controls though one easy-to-use dialog.
You can modify the brightness, contrast, saturation, red/cyan, green/magenta and blue/yellow balance settings all at the same time.
A simple concept but a surprisingly useful filter that will help you fix many of your common photographic problems.
    • Utility Apps » Plug-In Switch – Enable & Disable Filters
With hundreds of plug-in filters now available for expanding your host applications, it becomes essential to have a quick and easy way of organising all the installed files. Plug-In Switch was developed in order to help users disable filters on a temporary basis and re-enable them again when needed, without having to completely uninstall the plug-ins each time. Another handy time-saving tool.

Flaming Pear

Post by XnTriq »

  • Flaming Pear Software
    • Goodies & freebies
The Freebies are plug-in filters for Photoshop and other paint programs. They change colors in simple ways and you can use them free of charge.
      • Tachyon Image
Tachyon (“Tak-ee-on,” a faster-than-light particle) inverts the bright and dark areas of your picture, but does not change the hues. Ordinary inversion would change blue to yellow, for example.
      • ChromaSolarize Image
ChromaSolarize combines the Tachyon effect with solarization, which produces attractive surreal effects.
      • Anaglyph Flip Image
Exchanges the left-eye and right-eye channels in red/cyan anaglyphic 3D pictures.
      • Pixel Trash Image
Pixel Trash gives pictures the crude, blocky look of early 1980's graphics.
      • Demitone 25 / Demitone 50 Image
Two ways of making a quasi-Bayer halftone pattern that includes shades of grey.
      • Swap Red & Blue / Swap Red & Green / Swap Green & Blue Image
These filters work on RGB images – those with three channels of color: red, green, and blue. By swapping data between channels, they transform color, changing the picture's chromatic harmonies in useful ways.
      • Gray from Red / Gray from Green / Gray from Blue Image
These copy one color channel into both other channels.
      • Sphere Warp A / Sphere Warp B Image
These bend square tiles so they can texture-map a sphere without an ugly pinch at the poles.
      • RGB to HSL / HSL to RGB Image
RGB to HSL takes a normal image with its red, green, and blue color channels and replaces these with hue, saturation, and luminance respectively. Your paint program will think the image is still in RGB form, so the colors will look bizarre. HSL to RGB changes the image back.
      • RGB to Lab / Lab to RGB Image
As above, but for the Lab color space.
        L is luminance, a is red/green, and b is blue/yellow.
      • Vitriol Image
Vitriol changes colors' contrast as if viewed through colored glass, but without tinting the image.
Set the foreground color to the color of the imaginary colored glass, and choose Vitriol from the Filter menu.
      • Kyoto Color Image
Kyoto Color changes color using a Hue/Luminance/Saturation color space, but it's not the same HLS color space built into Photoshop. The Kyoto space produces more lifelike results for massive hue changes.
      • Veins Image
Draws a green contour, a blue distance map, and red ridges.
      • Rule30 Image
The rule 30 cellular automaton. It starts from a random state.
      • Make Cube Tile / Make Iso Cube Tile Image
Make Cube Tile takes a square image and modifies it so that six tiles can seamlessly cover a sphere.
Make Iso Cube Tile preserves symmetry at the cost of a more warped appearance on the sphere.
      • Zombie Image
Revives the undead. Best results arise from portraits showing eyes and teeth.
      • Zephyr Image
        Produces colorful haze.
      • Circle to Square Image
Circle to Square turns a circular region into a square. There are no settings and the warp preserves local shapes, so the result is easier and prettier than a morph.
      • Ornament Image
Ornament takes a photo of a mirrored ball and unwraps the reflection into a form called an “equirectangular panorama.” You can use this in panorama viewers to view and zoom into the entire scene.
      • TransLine / TransTone Image
TransLine makes every second scanline transparent. TransTone is similar, but turns a 50% pattern of pixels transparent. This can be useful if you are making transparent GIFs for the web.
The following filters only operate on layers with a transparency channel:
      • Solidify A / Solidify B / Solidify C Image
Solidify turns an image layer entirely 100% opaque. It reveals partially transparent areas, and can even help repair the corrupted transparency channel that some paint programs occasionally produce. It's also good for quickly filling in missing regions of a panorama.
Solidify A softly blurs the solid part into the transparent region. Solidify B smears only the outer edge for a harder look. Solidify C gives the smoothest, most uniform result.
      • Ghost Image
Ghost turns an image layer into a semitransparent picture made entirely of black pixels. It produces a smoked-glass effect that's hard to produce by hand.
      • AntiGhost Image
AntiGhost turns a layer's transparency values into shades of grey.

Mehdi

Post by XnTriq »

  • Mehdi – Free Plugins for Photoshop (and any compatible software)
Mehdi's site offers a huge and free collection of plug-ins for photoshop or other retouching software. Use these plugins to enhance your photos or to obtain nice effects.
    • Absolute Color Image
Absolute Color is based on a hue wheel subdivised into 6 sectors of 60 degrees. Choose a sector to restrict the tints of the image to this one.
    • Blots Image
This plugin generates blots, to obtain nice textures. Note that these textures are seamless.
    • Color MegaMix Image
Color MegaMix modifies the colors of any image. It is based on two rows of colors: 8 source colors and 8 target colors. According to these data, the plugin reconstructs completely the color space.
    • Contrast Balance Image
Imagine, the traditional filter luminosity/contrast, decomposed into four balances constant/contrast, resting on the following four oppositions: white-black, red-cyan, green-magenta, blue-yellow. You obtain a powerful tool, allowing to adjust colours and contrast. Whether it is to obtain artistic effects, or to retouch an image, you will adopt very quickly this plugin!
    • Curves Image
The plugin Curves proposes eight predetermined, interesting curves. Interface shows several miniatures of curves; select one and observe impact on the image.
    • Edges Fx Image
This plugin take advantage of an edge detection algorithm (precise) to obtain various artistic effects.
    • Equalizer Image
This plugin offers three methods of equalization, with several options to make this process as much as possible exploitable. In fact, what is equalization? Roughly speaking, equalization is a process that generate for each image the “optimal” curve which once applied to that image would improve contrast, in a relevant way. To reach that result, the process exploits intensively the histogram of frequencies.
    • Eraser Classic Image
Eraser Classic allows to erase easily a given colour. A typical use: activate the eyedropper, select the colour directly in the preview window, and adjust tolerance.
    • Eraser Genuine Image
Eraser Genuine modifies image transparency according to two criteria: a colour you wish to erase and a colour you wish to protect. So, this plugin is particulary suitable for images where two colours oppose clearly.
    • Fine Threshold Image
Unlike the traditional threshold command of Photoshop, the plugin Fine Threshold allows to get quickly, anti-aliased and sharp shapes.
    • Fur Image
The plugin Fur, disperse a simple figure (line or circle, configurable dimensions/thickness) over the whole image.
    • Gradient Smithy Image
Gradient Smithy allows, among others, to realize what photoshop calls gradient map effect. Clearly, the plugin uses any gradient to associate to every level of luminosity a colour. Furthermore, Gradient Smithy allows to create first complex gradients, quite easily.
    • Grain Natural Image
Grain Natural allows to generate grains of variable size. This plugin exploits colours already present in the image to achieve a “natural” result.
    • HSL Plus Image
HSL Plus is similar to the traditional hue/saturation/luminosity balance, but with some “Plus”:
      * A better colour integrity, especially for the luminosity.
      * A better control of the luminosity, notably the possibility of modifying contrast.
      * The possibility of making an automatic contrast (due to the Auto button) then of re-adjusting.
      * Three Out of Gamut Clipping methods.
    • Julia World Image
Julia's Curves are a family of mathematical curves (fractals) renowned for their beauties. This plugin is extremely simple: to track down an interesting curve, use the Julia control or press the Random button (that's all!). Besides, it allows endless zooming, to customize colours, and to save settings.
    • Kaleidoscope Image
Kaleidoscope is a plugin which proceeds to multiple symmetries to obtain beautiful patterns.
    • Local Equalization Image
This plugin proceeds in every pixel to a local equalization of the luminosity, with a matrix of 17x17 pixels. From an artistic point of view, local equalization can be interesting if you wish to stress the aspect of a given texture. But this process can be also used to analyze an image where certain details are barely perceptible.
    • Melt Image
This plugin allows to deform image, by waves. Size, intensity, and aspect ratio of waves are customizable.
    • Projection Image
The plugin Projection provides a collection of interactive perspective effects: ability to tile image in infinite space (copy or mirror mode), or to repeat edges...
    • Posterizer Image
Posterizer is a plugin which offers the possibility to posterize the luminosity and the hue.
    • Quick Mirror Image
Photoshop provides all the necessary tools to proceed to a symmetry. However it can turn out boring. With Quick Mirror, it will take you 2 seconds!
    • Seamless Border Image
This plugin allows to make any image seamless. (No discontinuities when image is repeated several times).
    • Sorting Tiles Image
Sorting Tiles imitates vaguely painting. Fundamentally, the filter cuts image in several blocks, makes a sorting of colours, and redistributes these ones following more or less complicated patterns.
    • Vibrations Image
This plugin proposes two different methods (“Levels” and “Lines”) to create kind of streaks. Two processes tend naturally to provoke the appearance of noise, as soon as frequency of streaks is important. That's why we introduced an internal blur (realized with floating values!) in order to ensure a perfect smoothing.
    • Wavy Lab Image
Wavy Lab offers numerous possibilities, distributed according to the Style and the Mode.
    • Weaver Image
Weaver is an effect which imitates weave.

Redfield

Post by XnTriq »

  • Redfield Plugins – free and commercial plug-ins for 3d special effects
    • Craquelure 3D
This filter creates a wide range of well known craquelure (krăkloor´) effects. The filter is useful in designing various abstract patterns, decorative surfaces and construction materials.
Two independent craquelure layers can be controlled to achieve an amazing variety of texture effects, from etched metal and silk plaster to melted glass and water ripples.
Random settings generator helps you to quickly and easily produce unlimited variations of craquelured surfaces.
    • Water Ripples
The highly realistic water ripples effect designer has numerous options as well as an impressive 3D quality. The random settings generator produces unlimited variations of rippled surfaces.
    • Seamless Workshop
It composes seamless tile from any image. Also, a “surrealistic modification” of a picture can be produced. It is a powerful tool for texture creators, and a helpful toy for graphic designers. An advanced tileable algorithm is used. The unique `Seamless Blur´ effect can be useful for any available tileable pattern.
    • Jama 3D
It's the simplest way to create corrugated and cellular like patterns from 2D images. You can easily make various bricks and herring bone textures. Sequenced filtering produces bizarre unreal deformations of the original picture, crumpled paper effect, etc. Using different 2D shapes on a transparent layer produces complicated 3D border effects. The edge antialiasing option improves the dithering. The filter is extremely compact and accessible.
    • Lattice Composer
It effectively designs grids and nettings. It produces a variety of weave patterns, fabric textures, body art tattoos and skeleton simulations. The 3D text effects are extraordinary. You can find numerous beautiful Photo Frames on our samples page. Downloadable presets are also available. Lattice Composer is the replacement of the former Mesh 3D filter.
    • Face Control
Face Control plug-in allows you to change facial expressions of people in the digital photos. It is very easy-to-use freeware program. Human, animal, alien, or any other faces are welcomed.
    • Redfield++
Redfield++ is a set of freeware plug-in filters for basic image processing that use advanced mathematic algorithms. All filters work only on 8-bit RGB images.
This filter transforms an image to appear carved in bas-relief, including lighting effects to accent the surface variations. It can look like aluminum foil, hammered metal, or carved stone. Bas-Relief plug-in is an easy-to-use tool to convert a photo to a pencil sketch.

  • Image Plug-in works with XnView.
Image Plug-in doesn't work with XnView.
:bug: Plug-in works with XnView, but it produces “unexpected results”.
:?: Plug-in has yet to be tested. The same goes for unmarked ones.
John, for now I've checked compatibility with v1.92.1. Pierre seems to have made significant improvements regarding 8BF support for the coming release. He's offered me to test the plug-ins with v1.92.2, and as soon as I'll get my hands on a test version I'm going to update this thread.

XnTriq, looks as if you plan to write a book "Adobe PhotoShop Plug-Ins". ;-) Again, thank you very much for this valuable info!

Perhaps at a later stage you can report what installation and deinstallation of those plug-ins was like:
Do the plug-ins mainly come in ZIP packages or setup programs? Do the plug-ins deinstall without problems? Did you use a special test computer (virtual machine) for testing all those plug-ins? (I think a general statement will be sufficient, no need to make a statement for each single plug-in.)

I'm glad you find the list useful. Of course this is just a fraction of what's available out there. Sooner or later I'll add a few more.
