If different versions show different bpp for the same image, that's a bug
If this is not the case, what do you expect to get?

24 bit per pixel (24 bpp) means there are three 8-bit channels (8 bpc) (wiki: color depth)
there is no {bpc} tag in the app

Compression ratio (besides the obvious "more bits - potentially better quality") is format dependent.
