Improvements to "Fast image scrolling" and standard arrow key scrolling

Post by NebulaV »

I like XnView MP, but when it comes to arrow key scrolling ACDSee Classic is a much smoother and less disruptive experience. And I think that is the only aspect of XnView MP that is inferior.

I would like to suggest the following improvements:

1) Ability to set the key combination for "fast image scrolling". It's currently (arrow key + SHIFT + CTRL). I think the ACDSee key setting is less cumbersome (arrow key + SHIFT) and it'd be nice to have this be user configurable.

2) Ability to switch from "arrow key scrolling" to "fast image scrolling" without releasing the arrow key. Currently if you hold down the arrow keys to scroll an image and then hit the "fast image scrolling" combo, the scrolling stops completely. It would be much less disruptive if the behavior was like in ACDSee, where you can switch between normal and fast scrolling without releasing the arrow keys.

3) Immediate response for continuous keyboard scrolling. In XnView, if you hold down the arrow key for continuous scrolling, it will scroll one step, pause, then scroll continuously. In ACDSee, the scrolling response is immediate with no gap or pause, which makes for a more responsive user experience.

4) Ability to set scrolling amount. This is especially noticeable on normal speed arrow key scrolling, as the amount of movement on one key press is very minimal. ACDSee in comparison scrolls 3 times as far on one key press. Making this user configurable (for both normal speed and fast image scrolling) would be preferable.

5) Smooth keyboard scrolling. In XnView, arrow key scrolling results in step-like scrolling. In ACDSee it uses smooth scrolling (similar to the option in Firefox). I think #1-4 are most critical, but smooth keyboard scrolling would give true parity with ACDSee.

I see some items like user configurable "fast scroll value" (not normal though) and some additional keybinds, but those look to all be for the mouse. Since 1.6.6 isn't released yet, do you know if those are for keyboard too?

This post is about keyboard scrolling.

Was the fast image scroll value implemented? If so, I am having trouble finding it.

And per my last comment, this post is about keyboard scrolling. Unless the fast image scroll value was implemented, it looks like only mouse settings were added in v1.70.
