Categories search : select the first one

Post by michel038 »

Fr/ Eng
Bonjour,

Hello,
Would it be possible to change the "categories search" answer?

The idea would be to select by default the first category suggested, if necessary by placing [Create new] at the end of the list.

- If the chosen action is: "assign a category". With "Open tree", it is also useful.
- Both in the categories panel and by using the "category search" button that can be added to the toolbar.

For users who do a lot of keyboard work, this would be quicker: all you'd have to do is type the few letters you're used to, and 'Enter'!
thanks for listening

I firmly oppose this suggestion!
At most, not automatically selecting the first alternative, means you have to press down, one more time than you desire. That's not a big deal.
On the other hand...

Whether using keyboard (and in this case, I generally would), or not, such behaviour would is very annoying and undesirable.
There are plenty of times, when you don't want to select either of the drop-down alternatives, which this would prevent.
When you want to choose one of the drop-down alternatives, you can easily do so, by pressing down.

Keep in mind, that writing in that field isn't necessarily searching, but can be assigning categories. The default is assigning. (I've set it to searching, myself, but...)

Right.
With 1 press of the down key to open a tree, or 2 presses to assign a category, and enter, it's OK.

Appuyer deux fois la touche bas du clavier, puis Entrée, ça marche... c'est suffisant

No, that is wrong.
Also, you forget about zero down key presses.

I am rather confused, by your apparent assumption, that the drop-down alternatives, only involves ONE category. Rather than 1-20, or so.

I do not understand the probleme you are talking about ...English is not my native language

Categories pane.
Sometimes I use "open tree" , I type some letters and see what I need, and click a categorie, or not

I often use "Assign", type some letters, see a lot of suggestions and click one of them.
I learnt that typing o i s is enough to get "oiseau" at the top of my list. Previously I used a mouse click, I hadn't noticed that I only need to press the "down" key twice to select the word, and type "Enter" with a glance , which is quicker than using the mouse. That's all I needed ...

... in my first post I should have written highlight instead of select.

In your list of categories, that may be true, but...
Let's see, if you choose "Export Categories File", the resulting text file has one row per category (and an empty row, at the end), so if I open it in my text editor, that also shows the row and column, that the cursor is at...
I have 7342 categories.

I can get a list of drop-down alternatives, with a scroll bar, even after writing four letters.
Well, depending on the letters, of course.
In some cases, I avoid a scroll bar, after just two letters.
... in my first post I should have written highlight instead of select.
Highlight?
Highlighting, implies that it is selected.
To highlight it, when it isn't, is confusing and misleading.
Also completely pointless, doing nothing to change the amount of down key presses, or mouse clicks, that would be necessary.

Either way, I fail to see any notable benefit, but plenty of drawbacks.

That would be handy
especially when 'Partial match anywhere' is selected

Actually that may work, eg in vscode 1st search result is always selected, so you can press Enter to execute it (see screenshot below).
However, '[Create New]' option as special one shall be on top of the list, so auto-selecting 2nd item can be a solution.

The type of highlighting that user0 shows, would be fine ...but that is clearly not what michel038 is talking about.
