wondering if you have any specific style in mind

  • there could be some variations of the same icon, like: regular/filled/dualtone
  • speaking about icons itself, there would be 2 sets (with a big stretch):
    - for system / not image content related actions - monochrome or no icon
    - for instruments - in color (color can be used to group some instruments, see Blender).
However, in both cases icons should not be overwhelmed with details/colors.
    • example of "system actions" icons
      icons_1.jpg
    • example of "instrument" icons
      icons_2.jpg

Cool icons! But they are even more beautiful if they are all white. Completely white squares. Or maybe not even the squares. Just a white bar. In this way you can also do the memory exercises.
Tip: Make all menu lettering 10% gray on a white background. Also, increase all spacing between elements by 200%. All this is even more modern and cooler!

Minimalist style is fine, but it's best not to overdo it. I can't stand these "modern" all monochrome interfaces anymore.
And it's not about resistance to change. I've been using the computer since Hard Disks didn't exist and I've seen a lot of interfaces.
It's all about usability. Doing everything monochrome isn't usability, it's just fashion.

Depends on the amount of icons and their importance.
I have updated my post with few examples.

Yes, of course. But not *all* monochrome. This is only fashion. Like the white lettering on a light gray background. Elegant, but not legible.
