jmoliver wrote: Wed Jun 19, 2019 2:15 pm Face detection and recognition is difficult, but XnView could simply start with reading these schemas (MS People Tags, MWG Regions, and IPTC Person Shown), and listing the People Names similarly as "tags" for search. Adding and editing people tags and optionally with delimited regions on the image could be similar as other apps allowing users to mark such regions.
could you send me image with these tags?
Sure will. I have been working with these tags for quite some time so I have garnered some experience with them. I will prepare a sample set of images with some cases to aid you in any future implementation.

Here are some links:
MS People Tag Spec: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... -reference
MWG Spec (pdf) starts at page 51: https://web.archive.org/web/20180919181 ... idance.pdf

The tricky part about People Tag Rectangles / Face Regions in images if it is cropped, resized, or rotated. The MWG discusses this and how to manage it.

Blog post I wrote on converting MS People Tags to MWG using Exiftool: https://jmoliver.wordpress.com/2017/02/ ... ople-tags/
Just the ability to view images already tagged with regions and names would be a very useful feature. Showing the tagged regions and names would be a good start!
I recently started using Tag That Photo, and whilst its a great facility not involving the cloud, it lacks a separate viewer that could be included with packages of images for showing the images and metadata. TTP seem to be under the impression the XnViewMP might be a suitable package so have been quietly waiting ...... is there any sign perhaps a viewing feature appearing anytime soon ?

Yeah, "Tag that Photo" is an excellent application for face detection and recognition. It has the capability of writing the face information back to the file as does Picasa, Windows Photo Gallery, Photo Supreme, Digikam, among others. If XnView could read/edit this information it would be great, the "heavy lifting" of face detection and recognition could be left to another more specialized application.

I have to agree, there are too many programs that try to be everything to everybody rather than concentrating on there particular area.
Will be very happy to see a viewer, that can handle all they types of metadata along with the means of selecting what images are to be shown from the metadata itself.

Adding some info related to Face Tagging-

IPTC recently introduced in their updated spec "Image Regions" which "can frame people in an image, using associated metadata from other fields in the standard attached to only that region, such as Person Shown". This would join the Microsoft People Tag schema and Metadata Working Group Regions schema as ways to mark people's faces in images. The IPTC is quite well known organization, so it would be interesting to see how this new standard is adopted.
