Subject: 0.84: Useless menu items "<Rating> (Move to next image)"

XnView: MP 0.84
OS: Windows 10 - 64bit

In XnView browser there are menu items in View » Rating & Colour labels for both rating and navigating to the next image. I suspect these menu items are intended to support a fast workflow but you cannot have a fast workflow when using a sub menu. It might be good to have these commands to assign shortcuts if really needed, but in a sub-menu they are useless and just clutter the menu.

Effect: Cluttered user interface

To reproduce:
1. Open XnView browser
2. Select View » Rating & Colour labels
Actual behaviour (bug): You will see the menu with MANY menu items for rating and assigning colour labels.

Expected behaviour: Clean submenu with menu items that make sense.

Note: This is not a real bug but I consider a cluttered user interface also as a bug.

These are available for placing directly on the toolbar, so a user could just line them up on the toolbar and click to rate an image and move on to the next, click to rate and move on, and so forth. I imagine they're not intended to be used from the submenu, but it either would cause frustration/confusion for people to see them as options for the toolbar and yet not be able to find them elsewhere or it could be that the items for the toolbar have to be in a menu somewhere, or doing so could have just made it easier to code.

This.

Also, we need to know about their existence and assign some shortcuts which will show up in menu.

They are present in Lr and in other DAMs. It would be great if they will work in viewer also.

Thank you for your comments, vertigo and m.Th..

@m.Th.: Do these menu items in Lr or DAMs have shortcuts assigned by default? If yes, THEN it does make sense to list them in the menu because the user sees the function, can use it and even learns how apply this function quickly using the shortcut. (The menu documents the functions and shortcuts available).

Yes - they have. In fact this is the main point. To quickly cull the roll of photos by continuously press 1,1,1,4,2,4,3,5 etc. - it is much quicker than pressing 1,[left arrow],1,[left arrow],2,[left arrow],5,[left arrow],2,[left arrow] ... etc.

The „...and move next” shortcut is a variant of the base shortcut. For example, if the base shortcuts are 1,2,3,4,5 then the „... and move to next” are Shift+1,2,3,4,5. Sometimes is other way round: base shortcut is Ctrl+1,2,3,4,5 and „..and move next” is 1,2,3,4,5.

Thanks for checking, m.Th.. I assumed that the shortcuts are the main thing.

O.k., I'll have a look at the list of shortcuts and will see whether we can find good shortcuts.
