I have used XnView for years on a PC and one of the options always available for "Auto Image Size" was "Fit image to desktop, large only". I'm now using a Mac which necessitates the use of XnViewMP and it appears this option is not available.
The beauty of that option is that images smaller than the desktop size are shown in a window that is fitted to their size (no extraneous dead space around the image). And images with at least one dimension larger than the desktop will be fitted to the size of the desktop while preserving the aspect ratio (and again, no extraneous space in the dimension that would not touch the edge of the desktop). Each image's window is resized to fit that image.
XnViewMP's "Auto Image Size" options all seem to use the previous image's window size to fit to. So if I open one photo and resize the window manually, and then close it and open another photo, that new photo will be placed into a window that was the size that I had used for the previous image. Seems odd that anyone would want that, given that all photos may be different sizes (why would someone want a small photo placed in the middle of a huge window with tons of dead space, or a big photo placed in a small window with much of the photo being cut off?). It seems intuitive to adjust the window size automatically based on each photo. Adjusting that window size based on the desktop size simply ensures that you are going to view the largest possible version of the photo while fitting all of it on the screen.
no "Fit image to desktop, large only"?
