I think the swirl is more appropriate for XnView.
That eyeball is playing fast and loose with the uncanny valley:

Hm... not so bad, but some of the icons look still "too chicken" IMHO. "View" text looks like "new" a bit. The name of the program is important and it should be good readable.

....Or he could alter the eye design to 'cut off' a part of the shape like what the legacy Xnview logo does, something like this; but properly done

Good idea. The problem of XnView logo is that it must look as an eye, but it must use orange and red colors - which is not natural, therefore it's not easy to create a new logo. Perhaps we could use orange and blue (instead of red) color.

here are the 3 last variations
swirl vortex was a good idea indeed,I guess the analogy with lens diaphragm blades is far from inappropriate for xnview.
