The help file for NConvert 7.98 (the latest version I have) shows CALS supported for reading but not for writing, many more formats can be read than are supported for writing for practical reasons...

Formats.txt doesn't, as far as I can see, indicate which formats can only be read...
The help file, if you create one does, although perhaps not as clearly as it might.
