What is the best divx decoder, the never ending question?

According to DivX Networks, FFDShow can't decode DivX 5 properly and given I now hate DivX 6.x I would like to know which way to turn.

Could you explain why you hate DivX 6.x?
For me, It works fine. I've never had problem since upgraded from DivX 5.

DivXSM.exe - need I say anything more.

I am not quite into this, but does DivX 6 actually add something new to the decoder? Far as I know DivX 6 is still using basically the same decoder as the latest 5.X version. I haven't seen any so called DviX 6 files what older versions couldn't play.

I am using DivX 5.21 and XviD 1.1 and currently XviD is probably dealing with DivX too.

Ps. The problem with DivX 6 is... bloat huge amount of bloat.

I think you meant XviD 1.1 final or XviD 1.2 alpha.
As a codec, DivX is dead many think it reached it's height at v5.0.5.

H.264 and x264 are the new codecs for the future and they need more CPU cycles than ever before.

I have tested DivX6.1.1, DivX5.1.1 and XviD1.1 and here are my findings:
- XviD1.1 is slightly better than DivX6 and much better than DivX5 (DivX6 may be slightly more adapted than XviD for realtime encoding of noisy sources, thanks to its fast internal Noise reduction).
- DivX6 should be decoded with DivX6: ffdshow(v2005-11-29) or DivX5 show strong colored artefacts and more blocks (it's really important, as I first concluded that DivX6 wasn't worth the upgrade when reviewing them with ffdshow -> big mistake!).

Therefore, I will keep DivX6.1.1 but will mainly use XviD1.1 now, especially as I will upgrade to a Digital TV Card... :P

PS: for information: x264 proved even way better... :D
...but realtime encoding is no-no for my PC, compatibility with hardware seems inexistent so far and I experienced the display non-matching keyframe with virtualdub. May be later...
