Free JPG reduction service

Post by JohnFredC »

Web-only so far and I haven't tested, but possibly of interest:

JPEGMINI

Edit-----------------------------------------------------------------

I changed the title of this post.

My tests show about 6:1 file size reduction with no discernible differences between the before and after JPGs. Perhaps such performance is not unique, but for single images the upload/download is conveniently speedy and I have been very pleased with the results.

I'm skeptical and it needs registration to test :-(

Please optimize this one: everdone.jpg and provide the result.

That it optimizes better huge images is a strong sign that it's lossy and hoping that you won't check the result in full size. If you can confirm the factor 6 then please provide your before and after JPG's, preferably also the lossless version before any JPG. everdone.png

Hi DOS386

That site doesn't need registration.

Try the following:
  • Click "Try it Now" (yellow button)
    Click "Select photos" (yellow button)
I was skeptical too, but it appears to work well for photos... try a large 90 quality jpeg.

That little 55k file link you provided shrank to 53k but it is not a photo, so I am not surprised..

Hmmm... I have no problem with that page. Here is a view showing the Yellow upload button. After conversion, the before/after comparison page will also show is a download button to retrieve the processed image.

You are welcome to download the following examples and inspect my personal results:

Before JPEGMini (6Mb)
After JPEGmini (1Mb)

BTW I am not affiliated with the service in anyway, just trying to contribute to the forum.

This is not a simple button, it it something with "Adobe Flash Player". Maybe your browser blocked it?

Best usable with any browser ... I had banned that malware from my PC long ago ;-)

Thanks ... done ... done ...

Image

This is probably the end of JPEGMINI ... because ...

... I placed 3 tiny fragments ... the middle one is from the original (6 MiB) picture ... the upper and bottom are from JPEGMINI (1 MiB) and NC/XN converted Q=73 (1 MiB) ... as you can see, there is a noticeable ugly blocking visible in the upper and bottom ones ... so JPEGMINI is lossy ... what's worse, NC/XN can do too and the ...

challenge for everybody seeing this post is to find out whether the upper fragment is from JPEGMINI and the bottom one from NC/XN or vice-versa. Please send a PM with your finding ("upper is MINI" or "bottom is MINI" or "unable to detect any quality difference") ... this is a blind viewing test :-) :-) :-)

If a large majority identifies the superior JPEGMINI fragment correctly, then JPEGMINI works ... otherwise, it's just one more hoax (after "infima" and 1'000'000 other B***-S*** file size "compressors" / "optimizers" ... I don't have all the names of those).

Note that with "nature photo" pictures (as by JohnFredC) the quality loss is much less prominently visible than with screenshots or pictures having text (see mine above). Also, the absurdly huge size as preferred by JPEGMINI reduces the risk that someone will check the images in full size or even zoomed up as I (inherently evil ) did.
There is indeed no WinZIP under my rock.

Geez.

Well, the upper one seems more "blocked", and the bottom one seems to have more blur...

Subtle differences, to be sure, but obvious when compared to the original (itself composed of jpgs from the camera, stitched and recompressed).

Good eyes, DOS386. Good eyes!

My guess: Selective (“regions of interest”) compression
  • WebSiteOptimization.com
    • Use Weighted Optimization
Weighted optimization or regional compression applies different degrees of compression to different areas of your image. By varying the quality within images you can improve file size.
      Blur Backgrounds for Optimized JPEGs
Background blurring reduces non-critical details to make the JPEG algorithm work more efficiently. Converting to Lab Color mode allows you to maximize blur for minimum file size.
    TheDesignspace Adobe TV
    • ADC Presents: Selective JPEG compression
Using Fireworks CS4, Platform Evangelist Kevin Hoyt shows you how to pick and choose what parts of your images get compressed and by how much, resulting in better overall quality.

It's not about contradicting your statement, John :-)
I was just curious what their approach might be, and how this reduction in filesize affects the (perceived) quality of processed pictures.

Re: Free JPG reduction service / or binary -jpeg-recompress

Post by oops66 »

Hello,
Very interesting...
For information, I have tried a similar open tool into Ubuntu called "ladon" and -- jpeg-recompress (like jpegmini), and I have a similar result (with the JohnFredC original image file):
****************
https://github.com/gunta/image-recompre ... /README.md
This is a fork of jpeg-archive.
The planned differences are:
- Support for WebP
- Support for JPEG2000
- Support for PNG24
- Support for pngquant

Image
************

https://github.com/danielgtaylor/ladon/issues/1
I've installed nodejs from the latest repo:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/node.js
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties python g++ make nodejs

Then ladon:
sudo npm install -g ladon
---
dowloaded JPEG-Archive 2.0.1:
https://github.com/danielgtaylor/jpeg-archive/releases

Code: Select all

ls -l
-rwxrwxrwx 1 1104 août 5 2014 jpeg-archive
-rwxrwxrwx 1 545419 août 5 2014 jpeg-compare
-rwxrwxrwx 1 526936 août 5 2014 jpeg-hash
-rwxrwxrwx 1 554200 août 5 2014 jpeg-recompress
--
If you are looking for an easy way to run these utilities in parallel over many files to utilize all CPU cores, please also download Ladon. You can then use the jpeg-archive command below or use ladon directly. Example:

Code: Select all

# Re-compress JPEGs and replace the originals
ladon "Photos/**/*.jpg" -- jpeg-recompress FULLPATH FULLPATH

# Re-compress JPEGs into the new directory 'Comp'
ladon -m Comp/RELDIR "Photos/**/*.jpg" -- jpeg-recompress FULLPATH Comp/RELPATH
then:

Code: Select all

$ ladon pano.Zoner.DSC03729-03731.cr.jpg -- jpeg-recompress FULLPATH FULLPATH
Metadata size is 3kb

ssim at q=84 (82 - 87): 0.999868

Final optimized ssim at q=85: 0.999832
