A new monitor...???

Post by Luc »

Hello

I actually have a Viewsonic P225FB CRT 4:3 monitor that I wish to change.
I have an eye on the Dell U2311H 23" 16:9 IPS panel monitor.
Price on it looks nice for my budget.
My main usage is amateur photography and post-processing.
Is it a good choice or something else should be considered?
Thanks

I have a 24" 1920x1200 Dell IPS monitor with a matte surface that I think is wonderful.

Some thoughts:

16:9 ratio monitors are designed primarily for HD video and IMO do not have enough vertical resolution (1920x1080, for instance). A 16:10 monitor typically offers more useful real estate (1920x1200 for instance), IMO. You would surprised how useful those extra 120 pixels are for applications...

Avoid mirror-surface monitors unless you like looking at yourself all day long... The so-called benefit of clarity and saturation promoted by the purveyors of such monitors (Apple and HP I'm looking straight at you!) applies only to fully darkened rooms. If you work in day-light (instead of the dark), the reflections totally offset any purported clarity benefit.

The matte surface of my Dell is like paper, completely non-reflective. Perfect.

I bought the Dell U2311H about a month and a half ago and love it!

Hello John and ckit. Thanks for reply!
You seem to recommend Dell and it's OK.
1920x1200 seem at first interesting because of additional 120 PX indeed.
But I would prefer 1920x1080 to fit my camera and TV monitor. A compromise.
I just saw the Viewsonic VP2365WB and a nice price.
It's just the response time that seems bad but at the end it's of second priority I guess.
What do think of it?
Thanks.
