Tool for screen capturing webpages

Post by helmut »

I want to archive the ebay auctions that I have won, so I've been looking for a way to save ebay webpages. Saving the HTML code is one option (e.g. using HTTrack), an easier and more fool-proof option seems capturing the whole webpage.

Currently, XnView cannot capture full scroll area, so ''ve just tried two screen capturing tools. Here are my results:

FastStone Screen Capture
+ Screen capturing work without problems, full ebay page was captured.
- Shareware, $19,95

PicPick 1.8.1
- Screen capturing the ebay page did work, but complete contents were only captured if there were no horizontal scrollbars. Not a big problem, but stil...
o For capturing you have to use mouse and keyboard (Print Screen key). For some users this might be intuitive and more flexible because you can close or open windows before capturing, but I find it a bit cumbersome
+ Freeware

SnagIt 7.2.5
Please note that 7.2.5 is not the latest version of SnagIt.
- Screen capturing the ebay page did work, but complete contents were only captured if there were no horizontal scrollbars. Not a big problem, but stil...
- Shareware

Comments and other quick reviews are most welcome.

Nearly all progs that are capable of auto-scrolling to get the whole page are IE-only. Even ones that work with other browsers usually just work by sending the url to be rendered by IE. Setting aside the fact that IE sucks, this behavior makes it impossible to get full page shots of how a webpage renders in any other browser.

@XnTriq:
Excellent list!

@Drahken:
Would be interesting to find a prog that works with all kinds of scrolling windows (e.g. of text editors, word, ...).

Faststone Capture is capable of capturing all kinds of scrolling windows, be it a browser window or a text editor. Unfortunately it's shareware (not expensive, but still..).

When I try to capture a scroll page it also captures the frame of the browser with it. Is there a way to get it to capture "only"
the page area?

btw, their contact us/support is terrible :!: . Emailed them about 2 programs around the same time and still waiting for reply
after 2-3 weeks. I emailed them again after 1st week, still nothing (yes, I checked my spam folder).
